Hello,

I just wanted to tell everyone something really interesting that has happened in my area over the last several weeks.

About a week and a half ago, when we were on our way to the dump, I saw in a field near someone's house a sign that said "Barter Day this Saturday".

The next week we went by again on the way to the dump, but wasn't able to stop due to time. This time there were a few signs on the way in each direction reading "Barter Saturday every Saturday / Buy, Sell , Trade". There were cars with their trunks open, pickup trucks and pop-up tents. There were crafts, vegetable, even chickens!

This week we are definitely stopping to check it out. It gave the kids and I a chance to talk about how "shopping" used to be. This was really cool, like an non-commercial flea market only better.

Thoughts? Is anything like this happening anywhere else?

I wish! That's awesome, you'll have to let us now how it all turns out.

I really wish folks would get more into the barter system. It really seems to scare someone when you mention "Will trade for 2 hours labor" Dang shame.

Oh yes! I could go for that! I want to know how they do it at that level - if you go then let us know all the details. Hopefully it would be like yard sales where they don't charge sales taxes (at least here they don't - yet!) or flea markets, same type thing. What a great idea

OOOO! what area of TN?

It's in Middle Tennessee around Arrington.

I do plan on stopping by to see what it's all about so I'll let you know what I find out.

All the time around here. They are called Barter fairs. But with that said, Barter fairs a few years ago would not allow money to be exchanged and they only wanted hand made stuff. Now it's just another flea market that sells only and it's mostly junk made in china. They still try and call them Barter fairs

I think hard times will pressure folks into going back to useful stuff, hopefully leaving the cheap junk on the tables.

Of course, with a possible gridlock situation in DC having the potential of giving us some relative freedom... it may not come to that until one party comes into power again... not that there's a lick of difference between 'em anyway... sorry about the threadjack.

I'm so proud of my middle daughter who lives in a city 6 hours from us... she wanted her hair colored professionally and so she and her boyfriend bartered leaf-raking and firewood splitting from the guy who then colored her hair! She's learning! I try to barter as much as I can around here, but there are no barter markets... Wonder if I could set one up in the Backwoods Home parking lot??
