I've missed this forum. I can't believe I've been gone from it for so long. I have had a lot going on.

Urban is not where I want to be, but it is where I am for now. All I can do is do everything I can in my current situation. I garden as extensively as I can in my given situation - gardening this year: 12 varieties of herbs (which I cook with every day, use for health and learning to use in other ways), tomatoes, brussel sprouts, beets, garlic, green onion, shallots, lettuce, arugula, swiss shard and kale, and two citrus trees. Family hunting and fishing - freezer stocked with fish, duck and geese.

I tend to prep a lot because I live in a sometimes hurricane affected area. I have a heavy stock of batteries, flashlights, candles, candle lanterns, wind up LED flash lights, oil lamps and oil, matches, canned goods, powdered milk, medical supplies, etc etc etc.

Prepping has helped get me through tight finances during a period of time this year. Those hurricane prep foods were a Godsend. I had good food to supplement my groceries. And I always had fish. My cats and dogs were grateful for that too.:D

I just had to add that last year at Christmas time, my dad gave me a bug out bag for my truck. I never mentioned it - he just thought of it on his own to get one for me. How cool. I added it to the other stuff I keep in my truck.

Urban homesteaders - feel free to share your stories from this year.:)

What a nice dad. Please appreciate him to bits. I lost mine the Sunday after last Thanksgiving.

Cil, I am sorry for your loss.:(

My parents and I have gotten closer and have spent more time with each other the past few years. I am grateful for that.:)

I wanted to mention one more thing about 'urban homesteading' this past year. I haven't lived in a bubble. A couple of my neighbors and I have been able to be friends and supports to each other. It has been such a blessing.

One neighbor will make red beans and rice and share one week and another week I make beef stew to share. When one neighbor needed money for food for her cats, I was able to help, and she shared dinner with me as a thanks. Last time I baked fish, I shared some with her, and she supplied the vegetables for the dinner.

I think that is as much of the homesteading spirit as anything else.:)

Deep South, I agree. We can try to know everything or have "stuff" laid up but at the end of the day we can't do it all on our own. Having others and their knowledge and knowing they are people you can trust and count on is crucial. To me that's what makes us different from the animals.

Let's face it, in a bad situation having extra people around you can count on is a good thing. Just thinking about security, no one person can stay awake around the clock.
