the local news is carrying a story about a garage blowing up and the stored ammo and guns exploding . i assume the guns were loaded . MAY JESUS BLESS YOU AND YOURS !!! breezemommy

Sounds like a typical 9th Grade news story to me, leaving out the pertinent facts. Ammo doesn't just spontaneously explode, something set it off. Maybe a fire in the garage? The story is what ignited the garage, not that a few rounds may have cooked off.

FWIW, uncontained ammo is relatively benign when burned -- it can sting, but is very unlikely to cause serious injury. However, a round in the chamber of a gun IS contained when it cooks off, and can cause as much damage as if it were fired normally.

What has been said.

A can of spray paint, spray lube, hair spray, deodorant are all a potential explosive in a fire. They all use a flammable propellant in a very secure confined container.

Even a bag of flour can be turned into an explosive dust, if used carelessly.
There probably was more to the story than that.............
