I seen this stuff adv at Cabelas for years. Very reasonably priced and found some on sale recently in store.
I bought a coupl hundred rounds of #4 Buck and patterened it on 1" Marine Plywood at 20 and 30 yards in a variety fo of 12 ga. I was shocked for economical buckshot this stuff patterened beautifully and pnentrated very aggressively. Not a single pellet failed to through and through out to 30 yards on 1" This could be some really good nighttime varmint remedy for the homestead! I suggest you give it a try and let us all know if you are as impressed as I am.
Inexpensive (RELATIVELY SPEAKING) GREAT PATTERNS AND REALLY GOOD PENETRATION, IT SHOULD EASILY DISCOURAGE COYOTE ON UP THROUGH FERAL DOGS

I'm a rifle guy, but that sounds great to confront 2 legged varmits with, too.
If/ when the need arises.
I'm down to just single shots now, been looking for another pump.
May I ask what choke you used? I'm a little behind in shotgun knowledge.

Fwiw, i recently saw some loads that got my attention.
It was a slug with buckshot together. Just cant remember where it was i saw it. I know i said to myself," Now THAT'S gonna leave a mark."
probably cheaper than dirt or midway.

As I said there was quite a variety from Older Broening Buck Special, to S X S mod and full most of shooting was open choked Benelli M#s.
The choke did not seem to have much variation on Patterns they were all much tighter than I expected Except for late 40s A% with 43" extra full which gave a half dozen fkuers the rest clumped together.
If going tactical I'm going to grab a Rifle
shotty more general/utility.

Being the "frugal" person I am........ (read cheap old SOB)
Most of the buckshot and slugs I have bought over a number of years has been......
Estate
Sellers and Belloitt (S&B) (bad spelling?)
Wolf
I also have bought Remington and Federal, when they are on sale. Very rarely have I found any Winchester brand at prices to compete with the others.
All of it that I have shot performed very well, to my thinking.
I would not hesitate to use any of the brands I have tried where ever I think I would need them.
Others may have different experiences.
Good luck

I've seen that same stuff and was thinking about picking up a box or two to try out and see how it works. I think there might be a few companies making a similar design. I saw this ammo from Centurion on Cheaperthandirt.com

thats the stuff. Good stuff. Bad if your on the wrong end of the barrel.
I keep my shotgun loaded with the Winchester ammo similar to this and definitely wouldn't want to be on the other end.

"Estate Cartridge Buckshot??"...
If I read this right?... "shotgun load for home protection"? Well, anyway... Ive been keeping a Winchester Defender 12 guage w/eight shell capacity around the house for decades now...Great Gun!! The only mistake I might have been making is keeping it jacked up with 00-buck??
Everything I read, and everyone I listen to tells me... "switch to #4's". Makes sense! Number four's will spread out just enough to be more effective. The double aught bucks just cross the room in such a tight pocket, I might as well be shooting a slug... and better off if I was shooting a slug!
Double Aught Bucks or Slugs make it too easy to miss your target without any spread, especially under the stress of combat. Adreneline is a bitch.
Number Fours are the best load for your shotgun... inside the house and directly around the perimeter.
And yea, Tufhelp...make me laugh!!!... SOB does mean "shooter of buckshot" Good One!!

My inside the house gun/load is Benelli M3 with 3" MAG 24 pellets nickel plated #1. Nickel plating makes it hard and penetrates about like 00, except there are 24 .30 cal prjectiles. This is heavy throw weight even for a 3" 12ga. so the velocity is not all that high making it a short range proposition

Marshal Dillon, good post, good ideas, makes me think?... #1's = 24 of the .30's, nickel plated for penetration, heavy enough for low velocity...hmmm? Sounds good. Would be perfect if I knew what a Benelli M3 is; if it is an auto feeder, then that would be perfect! Anyway, Im going to test fire your load suggestion.
You might take a look at the Federal "Black Cloud" FliteStopper ammo as well, it has some good possibilities for a defense round.

They are good, practical, versitile, and reliable working guns. I keep a brace. One rides in my truck loaded with slugs, the other (loaded with#1) is close by my bed.

An accident/opportunity/serendipity/stroke of luck ~ I had just decided to shop for an M3 and mentioned it to a nephew who knew of a State Trooper in another state who had the pair which he HATED ~ said "...they don't work worth a ..." (!?!?!?)
I took them out in his backyard loaded both with a real mish-mash of different rounds ripped nine in 2 or so seconds from each said "OKAY" and handed him cash. That was 9 or so years ago, nary a hiccup from either one since, and they have burned some powder and thrown some lead.
To this day I have no idea what kind of "work" he expected from them, and really don't care......
I learned a long time ago that there a many people in all walks of life who have varying distances between themselves and reality. I don't question it, if it works for me, I roll with it.

I'd load with # 6's or 7.5's you do not want the shot to pass through a wall and kill a family member, out of the apartment or off your property and kill a neighbor. When I taught hunter ed I blow a hole through a 2x6 using a 1oz skeet load fired at about 15 feet. This showed the effects of what was considered a wimpy load by most folks.
Buckshot is for crowd control
Buckshot is for crowd control
I figure you weren't speaking exactly literally there, I know we used bird-shot for crowd control in Panama (back before beanbag rounds and the like), aim it a bit to the ground (at least when your around pavement or good gravel) and you get a nice bounce and generally only light damage. Buckshot is indeed good for crowd control if you have a target rich environment, where you want to give out some serious pain. ;):)

That is the way I was taught so very many years ago on the farm.

"I learned a long time ago that there a many people in all walks of life who have varying distances between themselves and reality"
...that's a good one Mr Dillon! Gonna add that to my list of "old sayings".
But now you guys have me confused? NOT your fault! Im afraid my pencil just isnt as sharp as it used to be. #1's... #4's... Fed Blk Cloud FlightStopper... #6's... #7.5?? What to do, What to do?
I might just leave my Winchester Defender the way it is... all jacked up with 00-Buck!?

No need for the feeling of confusion.
There are going to be different circumstances in each person's world. These discussions are just that discussions. There are no absolutes.
For example, if I lived in an apartment or small house of conventional construction in a neighborhood where the house were close together, I probably would make a different choice rather than #1 Buck. But I don't. Where I am, in my particular circumstance, #1 Buck is the right choice for me and I am comfortable with it.
You've got to assess your situation, the circumstances in which you live.
Just for example in the County in which I live, an armed robbery of anybody or anything is headline news. There are many years in the past 20 when we have had no homicides at all. We have already had one incident this year a murder/suicide but as is usually the case with such incidents it was a domestic, a husband and wife, last year we only had one homocide and it was a justifiable, an action in defense of oneself. In 2009, 2008, and 2007 there were no homicides at all.
Where I live, there just are no people milling about, walking door to door soliciting anything.
If I find someone I don't recognize in my yard, on my porch and they didn't IMMEDIATELY introduce mthemselves and state their purpose and intentions, they've got some 'splainin to do and under Defcon 1 WepsCon 1.
I live in a very peaceful, quiet and POLITE environment, I am very fortunate in that respect. Not so with everyone.
What I do is just information to you, its not an example that is necessisarily viable in the your circumstances. You have to do what is right in your circumstance, which you know and I don't. You have to be comfortable with your choices. Inform yourself, collect the information you need and let your instinct, tempered by reason, guide you.
That will hold true for every day use as well as when SHTF.

Awesome deal for sure. I'm saving up but I'm opting for their M4

Pricey but man are they awesome. My bud got one the other year and I had opportunity to shot it a few times. Love it, only issues we noted were during break in. Low power loads just didn't cycle within what I'd consider the break in period. After having put around 300-400 rounds of full power buck, now it seems to eat everything.
