My refrigerator has been making a strange sound lately. The motor runs fine but when it stops it makes a rattling clunk noise.
Anyone know what it is and how to fix it?

No guarantees, but I'd first look for a loose bolt in the mounts for the compressor.

Thanks grumble. I will have DSIL check that for me as I don't have the tools.

Check the mounting rubber feet under the compressor for wear or looseness.

Thanks digging dog. I wrote your suggestion down along with Grumble's to show DSIL.

If you find the mounts good look at the clearance of the tubing. One fairly common problem is a broken internal mount spring for which there is no cure. They will usually run a year or more with a broken internal mount spring.

Sometimes they simply get some ice in the back that cause them to growl and grumble. Our old one is 30yrs old and still runs, but it freezes up now and then, and it growls and ticks and rattles from the ice. We don't put anything of value in it, just juice and pop, so we don't have to worry if it dies. We just shut it off for a few hours or a day when it freezes up.
