I'm seeing a lot of this recently. A couple churches in our area have signs out telling when their food pantries are open. One church sells food they buy in bulk at cost, given an order ahead of time. The city charities are swamped, according to our newpaper, and seeking donations. Looks like the safety nets are stretched pretty tight now.

And with people not spending wisely it will only get worse.

Same thing at http://www.angelfoodministries.com/ . They offer low cost boxes of food, no income requirements, order as many as you want. The boxes are distributed by churches nearly nation wide.
The prices are better than retail, but not as good as most of us are doing by buying in bulk and taking advantage of sales. But its hard to convince people they can save money by spending a little more at first. At least these programs are a *some* relief for the fiscally challenged masses...

I'm scared to see what is going to happen when the nets tear away...
Everywhere I go though all i see are people without a clue. Sheeple are all worried about running out to buy the latest electro gizmo or other junk for Christmas when I'd bet my pay check they don't have enough food at home to last more than 3 or 4 days.
Katrina will be a big 'ol party compared to what happens if millions are left with no food or other gov't handouts.
Our church keeps asking for donations for the food pantry and I told my wife no more. Maybe people will think me un-Christian for doing such and if so that's for me and my maker to discuss. But until I stop seeing so many of the so called "needy" pulling up in the new cars, over-sized pickups or SUV's; wearing their designer and name brand clothes; and taking their food back to their big houses on the hill - they get no more from me! Unfortunate as I know there are those that truly need it and many kids too, but the dirt bags are ruining it for all. I could spit when our pastor and other members say it isn't right to screen people or to ask them about their employment status or current income??? BS it isn't!! Only those that truly deserve should receive and since so many seem to have lost their humility it's time we help them find it. I know I won't get this quote exact but I believe the Good Lord said give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. To many have forgotten how to fish or are too lazy to even try. Or worse, they don't have the moral compass to know right from wrong and they take from the table when they do not have hunger or a genuine need. Leaving their neighbor and his children to go hungry.

Sorry, I didn't mean to get so far off topic.

You're not off topic, as your post highlights one of the problems truly needy people face today, when they find themselves at the back of the line.
See the same thing around here. There's a big segment of our population that's just plain greedy. They want everything they can get for free or nearly so. It's just tough luck for those in line behind them, who really need help, if whatever being given away runs out.
Reminds me of the hogs that Daddy used to grow. When he filled the feed trough, the stronger ones knocked the weaker (smaller) ones away. Sometimes he had to do an intervention to make sure all were fed.
Perhaps, one day, people will wake up and realize that even though we're supposed to help the needy, scriptures tell us to say NO to those who aren't in need through no fault of their own.
FWIW, at our church, we're helping several families this Christmas (annual tradition and extends beyond Christmas). Those families are screened before hand. Just as they were before they were given boxes of food for Thanksgiving. IMHO, to do otherwise simply further enables the deadbeats, greedy, and those who "steal" from those who deserve help.
Perhaps, one day, more people will wield Daddy's big stick when the hogs come to the trough.

When I mention the idea of screening you'd think I'm telling them we should whip them for their freebies. I love the nievity of some of them...one couple said... but only those in need would ask... I told them maybe that's the way it was 40 yrs ago but no more. Sad to see the reaction on their face like they couldn't even imagine such a thing. Like you put it, the strong greedy hogs line up first and want their seconds too...to heck with the family in line behind them that truly has need. The ones in need are the ones that say no we don't need this much or it's to much for us to use before it'll go bad and they give things back because they only want to take what they need and can use. Versus the "Hogs" that complain they don't like some item or that the brand isn't one they like or some other swine like comment yet they take it all anyway or might even have the gall to ask for more.

Your Daddy's Big Stick is for sure what we need! A few hogs come to mind that I'd love to smack between the eyes with it...well at least their greedy paws...
We as a society all need to get out our hog sticks to help start managing the pen. If we don't start soon what scares me is that the one who will end up bringing the Stick will be Comrade Uncle Sam. And he'll tell all of us it is on our behalf and then also go on to tell us what, when, and how much we'll eat where our place in line is and all that jazz here in the new People's Socialist Society of America that they're turning our great country into. Wait aren't they already banning salt, sugar, Crappy Meals, etc... guess they already are....
