Do ya really want a new car with all the grief that goes with it...or.....
would you prefer to keep your present ride and use all that money somewhere
else?

I guess it all comes down to the "fashion" statement you want to make.
Shallow and addled headed..or... Hardnosed practical.

I'll never let go of my old Ford pickup. It's the old body style, painted New Holland blue, but it's clean and it runs like a top. *Ill never let go of my 2000 Ford Contour either. Small little 4 dr. V6 w/24 valves, has a lot of get up and go and still gets decent mileage. And the trunk holds a bale of hay and I can fit 10 cinderblocks in the back seat and floorboard. ;)

Since I don't have a car, I can't comment. But if I were to get one, I think I'd get a Dodge pickup.

I am gonna buy a newer car probably in August or September but it is long over due. I have been frugal and this will be much needed in the near future. I have a 1988 Nissian with 268,000 miles on it and a 1994 Dodge Dakota with 187,000 miles on it. The Nissian is in better shape than the Dodge. I wouldn't trust either one on a trip anywhere. I run them around town and keep fluids in them as they both have issues. I have earned a newer car and will get rid of both these vehicles when that day comes. I keep putting off this purchase and have for several years. Already have a model picked, will wait for that smoking deal and pay cash for it. No more financing for me.

I'm gonna keep my old stuff. My Dakota has over 370K and is still tickin'. I'm rebuilding a 1985 VW Jetta for a daily driver, giving the Dakota a much-needed rest. I've got an '85 Dodge D350 that I went thru a few years ago for pulling trailers and heavy hauling. I'm a Diesel mechanic and am pretty good at scrounging parts and stuff.

I inherited my wife's first car, a VW rabbit, which I worked on extensively. I had a DIY junkyard nearby that supplied me with cheap parts that were sometimes brand new. I kept that car running for 23 years, and at the end it could still pass smog check, with me doing the adjustments by feel.

My wife however did not want it parked next to her brand new Mercedes, so she demanded that I get rid of it. I donated it to a local charity that finally sent me a receipt stating the car's value was 50$. I hope they didn't say that number in front of the car! Before the tow truck came that last day, I sat down in the Rabbit, held onto the steering wheel, and said goodbye.

I'm getting rather used to NOT having a car payment.I'll keep my 2002 Focus wagon going as long as I can....160K and counting........

I used that so called "stimulus" check to pay off the car in July. :D

Good article Buck. I am going to do pretty much what the article states. Looking for a 2008 Corolla as they have great customer satisfaction reviews and I know two families that own them. I figured on a 2008 as it will be a couple years old buy next summer or winter when I buy. I should be able to pay cash or at least come real close. Thanks for the article Buck. I visit that sight often as it has good information.

Super excited for June to roll around. We will be car payment free for the first time ever. We have a 2000 Explorer which we use for trips around town, hauling stuff, etc. And we are about to pay off the 2004 Corolla. Best car I have ever owned. It has over 100,000 miles and we have not had to do any repairs other than changing the brake pads. Wonderful.

Good to here you are almost out of debt on that Corolla. They are great little cars for sure.
