We have what I guess would be called an "insert" type of fireplace, sort of a prefab fireplace that is set in cement block masonry and veneered with bricks - Anyway, when we set a fire it is enjoyable, but of course all of the combustion air comes from the house, not an external vent. This seems to suck in more cold air than the hot air we are getting from the fire...

The backside of the firebox is in the back end of the garage, What I was thinking was to install a 4" dryer vent in the back or the fire box at the bottom and in the middle. I would reverse the flap in the vent so the air would flow into the fire box and not out. Any thoughts on this plan, or alternate ideas for supplying the combustion air?

Do it! Just make sure you understand the code about doing things to fireplaces and the materials and clearances you need.
