I have an unusual question about salt. Firstly, I have an old ice cream maker and people keep telling me I need to buy ice cream salt. I was wondering since the salt is only used to bring up the temp of the ice, has anyone tried to use road salt. I honestly dont see why it wouldnt work, its course, and its cheaper than the stuff they sell for ice cream. Plus I'm not eating it, just using it to drive the temp up.
I know road salt is pretty much unpurified iodized salt around here, comes from one of the largest salt mines in Canada and the same table salt comes out from there as we..
If anyone has any ideas let me know, also I'll let you all know how it goes when I Try it out...
Thanks for your opinions
wasnt sure where to put this question

We grew up making ice cream in an old wooden hand churner type and my dad just threw rock salt onto the ice from a big bag he had for using on the sidewalks in the winter - stuff is just fancy named and in smaller packages these days :p my experience anyway - and when we were kids, we would dare each other to lick the salt off the porch and we are all still alive to laugh about it now!

http://www.ehow.com/rock-salt-uses/ this may be a possible link to answer your question. after looking at it i had no idea on how versatile rock salt was. Maybe we should all have an extra bag for dyeing projects in the summer

We also used a hand cranked ice cream maker.
One kid sat on it covered with a gunny sack and the other kid cranked.
When it got hard to crank Dad would finish it off.
We always used rock salt.
I doubt ice cream salt even existed back then.
The salt never comes into contact with anything you eat so what difference could it make?
Still have the ice cream maker. Now all I need is a couple of kids. :D

Are you asking if the different types of salt will still allow the ice cream to freeze or if a different kind of salt will damage your ice cream maker?
We have an electric ice cream maker and use it several times a year and we have used rock salt, table salt, and even salt that was intended to be fed to the cows! It all worked just fine, we always ended up with frozen ice cream :)
