My niece just gave me one of the most beautiful seed catalogs I've ever seen and the best part is that they sell heirloom seeds - and more varities than I've seen in one place. They used to say that the big companies were buying up all the little ones and soon there would be only hybrid & standard seeds available from a few sources. I'm so glad that wasn't true!

The place is called Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds - have you ordered from them?

I just got my catalog in the mail last week, I have to agree it is beautiful. That is where I will be ordering the few things I need from this year. I ordered some onion seeds last summer and intended to plant them this fall but since that didnt happen I reckin they will go in in the spring.
All of us that have raised a garden in the past know that all beans are not perfect and the same size, all ears of corn not the same size. I noticed theirs are not either. So ya can bet the pics are of real veggies and not photo enhanced. Kinda makes me think that they are at least honest. But thas just me. At least they dont try to make you think that their seeds grow "perfect" vegetables. :yes4:

Have great day!

Can you check your catalogue and see if they ship to Canada? Thanks!

I just heard of Bakers for the first time a few weeks ago. I looked at their web site. They have some seeds I would like to order, that I haven't seen anywhere else.

KarenBC - they do ship to Canada. If you click on the link in the original post, about half way down that page is:
International customers may order a copy of our catalog here (http://rareseeds.com/books/order-catalog.html)
I don't know if this link will work, but the one on the page will.

There's a shipping charge to Canada, though - sorry! I'm really surprised they don't charge everyone for their catalog - it's that good.

They have a full on-line catalog if you don't want to spend for the paper!

I have been ordering seed from there for the past three years and always enjoy experimenting with several new tomato varieties each year. My favorite from last year was the Anna Russian.

Those catalogs go so fast, I bet they are already out of them. Although mine hasn't arrived yet.

I just talked to Baker yesterday. They sent out the first catalogs last week. They will be sending out more in January.

I just got my catalog last week - oh I love to browse it in the cold of winter! I do order seeds from them, sometimes several times a year. I have even gone there (Mansfield) and picked up some myself. It is like being a kid in a candy store. They are so nice and I love all the varieties to choose from. They are my mainstay when it comes to seeds.

My daughter ordered the padipan squash, a zucchini and a couple of other things......all came up, and was delicious!!

I highly recommend Bakers Creek

They're offering Hopi Grey squash. Gotta give it a go, despite being in cold country, because of Jackie Clay's writings.
I've downloaded the on line catalog. Can anyone tell me if it is the same as the print version?

Thanks for looking up the info - appreciated on my slow dial up. I'm just letting the site load...it looks amazing! Did you see the strawberry popcorn?

Just got mine a couple of days ago. Beautiful catalog yes but that guy just freaks me out a bit. A few years ago we lived not to far from there and are moving back in the spring. We loved it out there and the people have a lot to do with that so regardless of my thoughts on his clothing choices or looks in general he's probably nice as can be. Still freaks me out though.
Bought seeds from them a couple of years ago but didn't have much luck. I'm pretty sure it was due to lack of experience rather than the seeds though. Our temperatures in the house were not very stable and DW and I had a communication problem as far as watering. I was keeping them moist and in between an unbeknownst to me she was drowning them. Then we communicated but not enough so they got real dry. :o

We got our catalog last week also, have ordered seeds from them for 3 years now. Orders are prompt - we ordered online last spring on a Sunday afternoon and got the seeds in on Friday of the same week.
Every order has always came with some bonus packages too.
The creator of this company started saving, trading and collecting seeds as a kid and now has the Missouri location as well as one in California and just bought one on the East Coast (Connecticutt ??).
According to the catalog, there is a book coming out with instructions on seed saving and growing most of the plants they sell. Should be a good read. Adding it to my Amazon wish list next time I am on there.

Put in a big order from Bakers not too long ago on a reference from here. Seeds came promptly and they put in a packet of flowers I didn't order. Wondered if that was normal. I've ordered snus from Sweden for a couple of years and they do the same thing sometimes.

Oh, and new catalog came in the other day. :)

Thanks for the link CarolAnn. I wonder how long they will be allowed to remain in business. They are a huge burr under Monsanto's saddle.

I doubt they are even a blip on Monsanto's radar.

That is normal! This will be my third year ordering form them, and I have had nothing but good luck with their seeds (The ones I haven't messed up on growing that is). I got my new catalog last week.

I doubt they are even a blip on Monsanto's radar.I wouldn't assume anything along these lines. Monsanto and other big agribusiness have the USDA in their back pocket. The small farmer and backyard grower is in the sights of the USDA and big agribusiness. Now is the time to find the heirloom seeds that work best for you, to buy them in bulk, to properly store those not planted, and to learn to save seed as well. It doesn't hurt a bit to be prepared. Being unprepared can mean death. JMHO

Baker Creek sends a surprise with your order.

I got one too - very cool mixed flowers.

The order came today and there was a little note added inside that said they were sorry for the delay because they have had a huge increase in orders!

Glad I ordered last week - but when I did, a few things were already out of stock..... best get in second gear this season, and order soon ya all.

I also ordered some from the urban farmer - they have a lot of very different heirloom varieties that are old-world garden basics - I'm looking forward to working with them and saving seeds this year!~ Right now they have $5 off a $30 order and free shipping till february. Very cool and inspiring website too!

I just got all my seed catalogs yesterday and the day before - oh the joy of paging through them - Can't possibly plant and care for all I want to try. It is one of the joys of winter - these lovely inspiring catalogs! Now if I can just get going and whittle down my list and order before they disappear.

I was raising heirlooms before anyone got on the bandwagon. Kind of like the song, "I was country, when country wasn't cool."

I've known Jere @ Baker Creek for years. He's gotten seed from me. Check them out online. Order early, he sells out!

Also, Southern Exchange, Abundant Life Seed Foundation, Heirloom Tomatoes, there are a lot of places now to get seeds. Consider joining SSE in Decorah, IA. Through them I let out a lot of my seeds and it's a joy to see them being offered commercially.

I lecture on heirloom gardening all over the country. Everyone in order to become self reliant should be a seed saver. I concentrate my efforts on seeds brought here over a hundred years ago from the Germans from Russia.

A great source of seeds, especially for the Great Plains is Fisher's Garden store in Belgrade , MT. They have some fine OP things.

You've got that right. I don't think Monsanto can't stand to have *anyone* in business but them. They're doing all they can to control our total food supply.

I had a good experience in ordering seeds from www.ufseeds.com . Will report back here later on their germination rate.

I also recently bought a bunch of seeds at my local dollar store...now seems to be the time that they bring out the seeds, you might have to hunt for it, and not every store has a seed section (just a small seed display). Not sure about the germination rate of these either. But you can't argue with the price...in my case, they were selling seed packages for 3 for a dollar. And, almost all of the seeds were heirloom or open-pollinated varieties.

I doubt they are even a blip on Monsanto's radar.

:meeting:Then you know from very little, to nothing about Monsanto, nor have you read this catalogue. In the corn section, they made mention that very few varietys of corn today, have not been effected by Monsanto's GMO processes. So.................:dirol:

you're right, racerrick. Silent Spring is coming not as a result of DDT but Monsanto in the name of "progress" and "Modern agriculture". The pity is so many think Monsanto to be the savior of the world. :(
