MIL got a new electric tea kettle so today we got her old one! It's still in great shape, just needs a cleaning and whala! I saved about 15 US bucks so I'm happy! :)

What have you gotten lately?

I picked up a root spade at the christian thrift store. It looks like a 2 inch chisel with two foot pegs on either side and then connects like a shovel does to a wooden shaft. 7 bucks. The patent mark says 1893. A little rusty but very good steel, high carbon by the looks of it and sharpened up real nice.

Isn't it nice to 'inherit' perfectly usable stuff? Several years back, one of my brothers and his wife had bought a couple of nice road bicycles so they could get some exercise. They found out they didn't like riding them, so I got one. In pristine condition!

I haven't bought anything second hand lately, but then I haven't been to any resale shops lately either. I think the last thing I got was two pair of clogs for the winter--one pair black suede and the other dark gray felt. Name brands but I don't recall which brands right now. I think they were a couple of dollars a pair, and had never been worn. The felt pair still had the little plastic thing that holds a pair of shoes together, and the other pair still had part of a sticker on the sole.

I found 3 18-speed bikes at a local thrift store last week for $4.84 each. I'm planning on building a recumbent bike outta 2 of them with plans found online at http://www.wisil.recumbents.com/wisil/plans/plans1.htm. They seem to be in good shape just not real pretty but they'll do the job.

Neat website, thanks for posting the link!

I did buy something a couple of weeks ago but had forgotten--it's a folding laundry rack, like the cheapies at Wal Mart. I got it for $2 at a resale shop. I now have 4 folding racks, they're great for when you want to dry clothes outside but are not sure if it might rain. I just set the racks up on the porch under the roof so if it rains, nothing gets wet.

I got just about a whole new wardrobe last week......so I went through all my clothes and donated everything I no longer was wearing.

Also got a fruit/vegetable strainer attachment for my Kitchen Aide mixer.

You all got alot of nice stuff!

I wish we had better thrift stores around here. Finns aren't very wealthy so they use stuff until it's about to fall apart. Then they sell it to the thrift stores trying to get full price on old stuff. It's a hoot lol.

Katrina, are there flea markets there? I have no idea what things are like in Finland.

If you could gather up enough stuff, you could have a nice little business, provided the laws and taxes there are friendly to small businesses. I've thought about doing it myself, but I think the resale shop market is saturated around here.

Katrina-Sisu
09-12-2008, 03:31 PM
Yep, we have alot of flea markets around here but the quality is really bad. You can find good deals on small things like silverware or stuff like that, but no good deals on clothes or larger items.

I'd like to start a business like that, but Finland is very anti-business. Socialism at it's best lol! So much red tape the gov't resembles a Christmas tree lol!

SIL gave us her old exercise bike to boot lol. She said the digital display doesn't work but the bike works great. I'm happy for the bike since Hubby can't jump rope (inlaws moved in) and he needed an alternative to running.

VFW yesterday - a box of canning jars for $1, an oil lamp for 25 cents, a coleman kerosene camp stove for $2
I love finding canning jars - I was starting to get low and really didn't want to pay the $11 per box retail

I noticed that mason jars are really selling out of the resale shops here. Used to be there would always be some on the shelves mixed in with other stuff or maybe 6 or 8 sitting by themselves, and you could pretty much always go to any resale shop and buy a few without looking too hard. But I noticed that they are really getting scarce. I guess folks are buying them up and/or keeping them and not donating them. I noticed that the two closest shops to me didn't have any at all!

I bought a couple of big ceramic pumpkins with candles inside them, one is a Hallmark candle. Paid $1 each, I think, and the candle in one smells just like a pie or cake baking! I had to blow it out the other night because I was getting hungry from the fragrance. :-/ I love to do seasonal decorating but can't afford the $$ at places like Hobby Lobby, Michaels or even Wal Mart, so when I have an extra dollar or two I sometimes buy seasonal stuff. Most of it is like new, I think people just buy it and use it once or twice and get tired of it. Christmas lights are easy to find, and usually only cost 25 or 50 cents a string.

I also bought two primitive/colonial American light fixtures--the kind that have a turned wood body and the curved black candelabra arms. The sockets look like candles and the bases for the sockets are crimped tin to look like candle holders. One has 6 lights on it, and I paid I think $7 for it, and the other is much larger, has 8 lights, and I think I paid 10$. I looked in Country Sampler magazine, and those kinds of fixtures sell for minimum of $150 and up! I put the one with 6 lights in my sewing room to replace a hideous florescent fixture, and the bigger one is going to go over my harvest table in the kitchen. I need to get some 3/4" pvc pipe to make new candle sleeves for it, because some are missing and one or two are broken. Figured I'd paint them off-white. I love the prim/colonial look but again, I can't afford to spend much on buying stuff.

I've got a few myself and love them all. I googled Old Hickory and apparently they are stil at it:

http://www.knivesplus.com/OLD-HICKORY-KNIVES.HTML

There was a note on the site:

"Editor's note: Old Hickory has changed the thickness of it's steel to keep the price low and make them even easier to sharpen. Please read notes at bottom of page about these items"

But one plus, not one mention of China....

Isn't it wonderful that all this stuff is being saved from the garbage dumps and going to fill the needs and wants of people for a very small price or for free? I don't know where I would be if I hadn't been so good at scrounging stuff up all these years. It's trendy and 'green' to 'recycle' or 'repurpose' things now, but back when I first started in the mid-80's, it was anything but trendy and was looked down on by just about everyone. Didn't stop me, though. I was too poor to not recycle and repurpose.

walls0stone
09-30-2008, 09:25 PM
another point I'd like to make is less and less is going to the dump in part, do to the high value scrap, not the trendy word green. ...ok, maybe green in another form. ;) It's good old capitalism. People also don't see another business that's still going up and up, disspite the world... tradional building. A style of building for the well to do that uses old stuff to build a new old house. In other words, they pay big jack for stuff that all comes from one era and style of decoration. It builds a new house from the parts of many condemed houses... by keeping it out of the landfill, we produce a trendy, taxable and marketable good.

* Picked up another long winter coat with a zip out lining today for something like $12.95, *a couple of towels, and several books for about $25 all told. *
* Hit another thrift store and got some clothes for the 2 yr. old granddaughter for about $10.

* *I goofed! *The coat I bought was marked $3.93 on a white tag which gave me an additional 20% off. Yipee!

When I went to hang up the coat I saw the tag on it again and realized I had goofed. The $12.95 price was on the first one I found with a zip out lining, a blue trench coat style, that I realized when looking at the government tag in it that it was actually an Air Force coat. Probably for a female officer from the style of it.

Went at about 645am Friday morning to the dumpster at home in the city to throw the trash. As i got closer to the dumpster i noticed a stand up bbq pit right there next to the dumpster. The closer i got i noticed it was a Weber grill. On the outside it looked it great shape and when i opened it it was just missing the top grill. The wheels roll freely with no problem, handles in place etc.

I went and got my truck and backed up on it to load it. Went to Academy Saturday and while there picked up the grill for it. Grill measures 22.5inches and is a good cooking size for bigger quantities.

Who would throw something like this? These are costly. Took it to my place out in the country where it joins my other itty bitty Weber grill. I thought it was a great find. :D

Dumpster grill.

YES! ;DFor the last week or so there has been a hollow core door laying on the ground behind our local food market. Today I asked the manager about it and he said they were throwing it away and I could have if I wanted. :o It turns our that it may infact be hollow core but with metal covers on it. There are almost new deadbolt lock and door handle on it. I will give the deadbolt and door handle to the locksmith half a block down the street from me and use the heavy door for a bench in my basement.

GoodDaughter
10-12-2008, 07:38 PM
No doubt they were also happy to have you take the door off so they didn't have to bother with it!

I didn't exactly get them 'second hand', but I did get a big handful of angel wing begonia 'cuttings' today...went in Wal Mart to get some cat food and went in thru the garden center and a lady was sweeping up dirt and debris from under the plant benches. There was a pile of broken off begonia stems that had the prettiest dark coral, tube shaped flowers on them in amongst the dirt and trash. Being the scrounge I am ::) I asked if they were going to be thrown away and if so, could I have them? She said yes, I could have them so I got a little bag and picked them up on my way out of the store. I hope they root, they are really pretty.

Theres a lady in my Department at the V.A. hospital where I work. Her father died 6 years ago maybe? Im not sure. He was a WW2 vet. And he liked to tinker, work with tools and what not.

Well I bought a small house almost a year ago and when I did she asked me if I needed anything for my house as far as tools. I was like "oh ya, anything". She told me to stop by her house and dig around the basement. Well this is what I got for free cause it was taking up "space".

A Troy-built Pro-Line CRT Garden Tiller, a beat to snot lawnmower that didnt run for 5 or 6 years and was sitting under her porch I got it running in 30 mins.

At least two 5 gallon Buckets full of older style hand tools, mostly quality stuff from the 80's and early 90's, 2 sabre saws, a skill saw. Tons of socket sets, 3 rachets, a Small work bench. Oh and a bayonet sitting around in her basement for an No.1 MKIII enfield. I payed her for the bayonet.

I got a brand new CJ Banks sweater vest at Goodwill two days ago. It was marked $2.99, but had a red tag, and since it was Red Tag Day, it was only 99 cents. YAY!

They had a bunch of Dooney and Bourke purses--brand new looking, if not actually brand new--and they were waaaay too expensive ($30-$40). My mother had those purses and I know they are terribly expensive. Out of my league.

* The four year old dropped her jacket somewhere Monday so we stopped at the downtown GoodWill and my daughter found a black hooded jacket with cat ears on the hood and several cat silhouettes or partial silhouettes on it in red for which she paid $3.50 or so. *She looked it up online and the jackets start about $55 or so if bought new, pretty good buy to my way of thinking.
I found a pair of scrub pants in my storage shed the other day and brought them home yesterday and I'm wearing them today. Once I can get into it easier I'll go through any clothes my brother left here and see if I can wear any of them. If they'll fit me I'll bring them home and wash them then put them in with my clothes supply.
