Oven apparently has died - something to do with the pilot light in the gas oven. Right now I just don't want to spend the money for a new oven so

Thanksgiving dinner at Mom's house -

Turkey cooked in Nesco Roaster; cornbread cooked on the gas grill for the cornbread dressing; dressing cooked in large electric skillet; home made rolls and youngest son's duck he killed cooked in the gas grill and an apple pie cooked there. And it was still so hot in the kitchen we turned on the AC - it was 70 outside yesterday. Everything came out perfect so yes you can make do.

One year our oven died in just the same way. Thank goodness for a gas grill! Turkey was put on the grill and was delicious! All other sides were already prepared so we just heated up on the grill after turkey was done. Lived without an oven until we could get one on sale. Did the same thing with the refrigerator too. Lived without one for two weeks until one could be had for no interest financing for 12 months. Ate home canned foods.

That happened to my Mom two years ago.

She ended up making the turkey in one roaster, and she borrowed mine to make the stuffing.Luckily everything else was done ahead of time,as it was Thanksgiving morning when her oven broke.

I am currently living without a clothes dryer, too cheap to go out and spend money on a new one.....

Drying everything on an indoor clothes rack.......on the good side though,my gas and electric bills are lower. ;)

Give Thanks that God gave you the ability to make it all work, regardless of your situation. :)

I lived without a stove for two years! Thank goodness for a microwave (early 80's model - yuck!), an electric wok, and a hot plate. And yes, you can make do surprisingly well. To be honest, I think the food even tastes better when you've had to "make do" at the last minute, because you appreciate the fact that it turned out at all more!

I grilled a turkey once: I just cut the meat off in big hunks and put it on the grill.

It IS delicious: I will have to do that again some time soon! Thanks for the reminder!

If it's a gas stove you don't have to use use the pilot light to light the oven. Just twist up a long piece of newspaper, light the end, put it up near the burner on the oven and turn on the dial. I've done it many times in the past and had no trouble. I did the same thing with the burners when the electronic pilot light quit working. I know this is a day late but maybe it will work for you now. If not, it's something other than the pilot light, maybe a clogged gas line or the like.

ah, yes. you probably just need to clean/adjust your orifice. you may need a new I think it's called a needle valve(?).
Check online or call your gas man, he CAN help you avoid the cost of a replacement stove. I had an old 1950's gas stove and my gas man, after the second time in as many years showed me how to clean and adjust mine. It usually just a matter of 15 minutes labor. I can (and must it seems) clean my pilots on my ventless heaters at least once in every heating season.
I really think it's caused by condensation in the lines as in gas/copper/water=corrosion.
