It's nice to be frugal but can you either give something away for free or for a reasonable price? Or are you one that will buy something for a dollar and expect five if you sell it ?

I have NO problem giving things away. getting rid of it however but first I try to find someone who can use it or wants it.

I usually try to give things to family or friends first, and then if no one wants it I usually take it to the local mission resale shop and get my tax deduction slip for it. Same thing for my mother and siblings--things tend to migrate around until someone either takes it or it gets taken to the mission. Just the other day my grandmother gave my mother three bolts of acetate lining fabric she'd had for several years, fabric like coats and jackets are lined with. Mom couldn't use it, and I'm the only other grand daughter in the family who sews, so mom asked me if I wanted it. I kept one bolt just to have on hand, and then took the other two to the mission along with a small box of other things.

I once had a garage sale and did pretty well. I was up to my ears in stuff and was tired of shuffling it around. Made a nice bit of money and got rid of most of it. Other than that, I don't think I'd buy something for a dollar and try to sell it for five. I know someone who does that, and usually can't end up selling it because she says "well, it's WORTH five dollars (or whatever)". My philosophy is that, if you can find it for a dollar, other people probably can too. And 'worth' is a very subjective word.

I give things away all the time. I would never try to get more for something than I paid for it.

If I did put money into fixing something however,I do try to get at least that much back out of it.

Several months ago,I listed a bunch of repair project sewing mahcines on craigslist for free.....the guy who came and got them insisted on paying me $20.00.....

I took that $20.00 and gave it to my church.I hadn't paid anything for those machines, and many of them had come from the church's give away day anyhow....

I too know someone who buys up bunches of stuff,or takes garage sale leftovers and tries to sell it for way more than anyone in their right mind would pay.....makes me just shake my head.........

I try Freecycle@ first, if not taken, then it is taken right away to the mission thrift store. I stopped having garage sales, too much work, and my goal is really to get it out of here. I know people who pile stuff to the ceilings in their garages saving it for a "garage sale". If it doesn't sale, then they put it back in there for another sale later. That would make me crazy....and its junk!!

I like the way the show Clean House does it. They have a yard sale to a certain time and what doesn't sell gets donated to a charity [usually Out Of The Closet] and the charity truck comes at that certain time. This way, nothing, nada, zip-de-do-da goes back into the house.

I've sold stuff on Craigslist and at yard sales when cash was really tight. I always sell the items on hand for much less than they are worth (example: I sold a 13" color TV for $10 and an stereo/CD player for $5). I also give a lot of things away to Goodwill. Not bragging or anything; it's just that I buy a lot of nice things there, so I try to give them nice things as well.

We are counseled to "cast our lot upon the waters" to receive our
fortune. That ,to me, means give away what you have for rewards that
will always enrich you in one fashion or the other.

We offer to the kids first, then it goes to Goodwill. I don't have the time nor the inclination to have a garage sale. Our kids are all just starting out and have children with special dietary needs. They spend most of their money on medical bills so anything that they can get for free is a big help.

I was the recipient of some nice 'giving away' yesterday. At the parents for Thanksgiving, they had bought a new washing machine, the kind that doesn't have an agitator in the drum. The manual says to not use powdered detergents--use liquids only. They had a new, unopened 25 lb. bucket of Sun brand powdered laundry detergent, a large box of powdered color-safe bleach, and about half a box of borax. They said they wouldn't use it, and gave it to me. I was very glad to get it.

Also got a 6 lb bag of dry cat food their four cats are too 'refined' to eat. Hah, my three scavengers think it's delicious.
