For the last few weeks I've been rollin' my own smoke
I pay $19.40 for a cartons worth of tobacco and cigarette tubes and stuff them at home rather than $35 to $40 for a carton of ready rolled.
I use the American Spirit tobacco which has NO toxic additives in it. It still isn't healthy but it is a little bit safer.
My $0.02.

Not sure what the set up is there but where I live I have a reserve close by where I go and purchase a carton cigarettes for $10 and if I buy a lot the natives sell them for to me for 7 bucks a carton. I don't smoke but know folks that do. They don't complain because if they buy a brand carton is $80!!

Ob the subject of smoking, or at least creating smoke and fire, the current issue has an article on making your own fire starter tinder using string and paraffin. Bob and I backpack a lot and we make our own fire starter tinder for our campfires and also for emergencies. We save our dryer lint (not much since we only use the dryer when it rains) and my parents save their dryer lint for us also. Since Jews light two candles every Friday, we have lots of candle stubs and wax drips. We just melt them down and roll up the dryer lint into a sausage, dip it into the melted wax (wicks and all) and let it dry on wax paper. We cut it up into the size of maybe a 1" green bean sized strip. This cost us nothing but the gas to start the stove burner because the lint is free and the wax drippings are free.

Congrats! The next step is to grow your own:
How to Grow Tobacco Forum Index (http://www.howtogrowtobacco.com/forums/index.php)
This year we tried a dozen plants or so, next year we go for replacing our supply entirely. There are a few guides out there on small scale cultivation.

Pat

Allow me to suggest that you give pipe tobacco a try for a wider range
of taste and aroma when you RYO ciggies. Yes, you can use chop, shag
and chip cut pipe tobacco's in RYO 'cause they will roll just fine.
added place to buy bulk pipe tobacco's.......

We have had some luck saving by using a new approuch. It may work for some of you as well. Every payday I put money into savings. I have a set amount and I commit to putting it in no matter what. It forces us to pinch pennies a little harder as we both want to save for a land buy here next year or maybe the year after for sure. Anyways it is working out great. Sometimes we both realize things are just a little to close so I will take only what is needed to make ends meet from savings and deposit it back into checking. This has only happened two times and right now we have more than we have ever had saved. If you don't got it you can't spend it. Looking at the check book and seeing a few hundred in their makes it easy to say, hey let's go out to dinner tonight opposed to seeing fifty bucks and realizing payday is a few more days away so we better hold off.

American Spirit tobacco does not have ANY additives, not even flavor or scent additives. I'm happy with it.
