Sure, it probably went over her head. What's worse, though, is that the cashier that you talked to is probably too apathetic to even go home and google it. She could probably just care less. And that's too bad for America.

Good For YOU!!! I applaud anyone willing to stand-up for what they believe in and shout it out loud. You did the right thing, GoodDaughter!
Something about 'In Cooperation with Citgo/Venezuela to help Americans save money on their energy bills' confuses me, though. If they hate us so, why the peace-pipe offering? Hmm... interesting.

I googled the the tag line on the free offer I came up with this it is from a Latin American consortium of newspapers. It came with a Mcfee gave me a warning opening the page but i run pretty good security. Here's the article:
*3. Venezuela: Citgo Gives US Lightbulbs
In mid-July Citgo--the US oil distributor owned by the Venezuelan state oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela, SA (PDVSA)--began a program to distribute compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) to low- and middle-income families in Houston and Corpus Christi, Texas; Lamont, Illinois; Lake Charles, Louisiana; and Washington, DC. Ultimately the program is intended to supply some 460,000 of the energy-saving lightbulbs to homes in these cities and in Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Madison, Wisconsin. Former Congress member Joe Kennedy II (D-MA), Venezuelan ambassador Bernardo Alvarez and Citgo president Alejandro Grarado attended the inauguration of the program in a Washington, DC home. The CFL supplements the Citgo-Venezuela Heating Oil program, which has provided winter fuel assistance to more than 1.2 million US households during the past two years [see Update #826]. (People's Weekly World 7/15/08 from correspondent)
The state of New Hampshire is now participating in the heating oil program; it is the last state in the Northeast to
participate. Sen. John Sununu (R-NH) called the program a "disgrace" when it started in 2006, and Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat, kept New Hampshire out of it. Now that the price of heating oil has risen from about $2.50 a gallon in the Northeast to an average $4.61--as of June 2008--the local politicians have changed their position. On July 17 Sununu criticized Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez Frías but said he has no problem with people getting help from Citizens Energy, a nonprofit organization set up by Joseph Kennedy that is managing the program. (San Francisco Chronicle 7/18/08 from AP)

OK, but you were at a Christian related store? I think that "the church" is mixing charity and Bribery. I also don' t feel that all those stores and churches think about what and who they take money from...or who they give it to for that matter.
One company I know of talks Godly all day, then they take money for the products they sell to all the churches and THEN live life anothe way with the money they make form the business....the business supported by the churches. Free light bulbs or Church supplies it matters not.. I do not feel that these groups see anything other than the flashy do gooder package

Dear GoodDaughter,
It's deeper than you think.
This compact florescent bulb nonsense is more than just tawdry propaganda publicity for Hugo Chavez, heartily supported by sheeple religion. It is actually a way to poison U.S. Citizens and cripple U.S. business.
Those compact florescent bulbs have Mercury in them and have to be disposed of as hazardous materials. It says so right on the packages. If one broke inside a skyscraper, the owners would have to shut down that floor and call a Hazmat team to dispose of it.
If you want to really save money without lining the pockets of Hugo Chavez and without hazardous chemicals, get LED bulbs instead. The C. Crane Company sells them and while they are initially higher in price, they only consume a tiny fraction of the wattage of either incandescent or florescent bulbs, while lasting much longer than either as well.

And the lights you see in every overhead fixture in every office building in the country have phosphorous in them... and most of them end up in dumpsters despite the fact they are hazmat... so drop the paranoid "the world is out to get us" crap. There is fluoride in tap water... that is worse than the mercury in CFL's... in fact we are one of the ONLY countries that still fluoridates it's water.

Dear Ryan Mercer,

Congressman Ted Poe has something else to say on this subject:
Important Information on Energy Saver Light Bulbs! (Texas Congressman Ted Poe speaking about CFLs on C-SPAN)

Oh, and as for all of those businesses that throw away burnt-out Phosphorus overhead lights...one anonymous phone call to certain alphabet soup agencies could get them fined or even shut down.
So, yep, not only is it Argentina (oops, I mean Venezuela) and the world versus the U.S., but they are using our own legal system and our own Green hysteria against us.
Just because it sounds paranoid doesn't mean that it isn't true.
;D

At least it's possible to filter out Fluoride from your water supply, if that is what you wish. *It's not so easy with Mercury in the atmosphere and especially in the bloodstream.
(All of this is assuming that Fluoride really is a threat. *Myself, I'll gladly run my tongue across the pearly whites of an American cutie instead of the Stonehenge grills of far too many Brit birds. *And we won't even discuss the yuck-mouths of the rest of the world. *And not only that, but the American girl will kiss me longer, since a healthy mouth prevents blood infections that affect the heart.)

Dear Ryan and Forum Members,
Just today, I had some kind of electrical difficulty with the lights in my kitchen, which have the CFLs. I believe it was a power surge of some kind. Anyhow, not only did the power surge knock out my CFLs, but the plastic base on one of the damn things was melting and smoldering and stunk up the kitchen and my entire Efficiency of Solitude. I opened the window and vented the place out to make sure the smell didn't remain. (Alas, my Landlord is a real McFly and didn't equip either my kitchen or my bathroom with an external vent.)
I am just glad that the CFLs didn't make the roof go up in flames. I hope like Hell no Mercury was leaked onto any food. I'll be cleaning off all nearby packages to make sure.
Soooo...what's all this then about paranoia?
;D

I'd rather have a melting bulb base than an exploding bulb. I've been a few feet from a ceiling fixture when a bulb exploded, not fun.
Also, you have to be careful with cfl's, every cfl is designed with a specific use, most people just grab one and stick it into any fixture without paying attention to what it is meant to be used in. Just like people who plug electric heaters into extension cords then freak out when the extension cord is melting.
