We lived in the mountains of N Idaho and it wasn't that easy to grow as much of a variety as in lower elevations, mostly because of the frost dates. The 'virgin' soil is a lot of work too - weeds and tansy like you wouldn't believe, so you need to have a good plan for getting the ground ready. You also need to look into fruit tree varieties if you'll be planting those.
By the way - even though we 'felt like' we were in the middle of the hills - we did have a Directv satellite that did okay except when it got covered in snow from the wind!

Val,
You said... " I know it’s asking a lot, but our God is able. After all, He owns it all and can afford us a small piece. We don’t want a mansion, just a small country home in the backwoods."
...well said, Val.... well said!!
Sounds like you really got the idea!! And that is 99% of the whole struggle... having "the right mind" about it all. Sounds like to me that you and your man are going to make it. I dont worry about you all at all. Your already 99% there, already.

Val, you can probbly find a lot of answers to what to grow, how to amend the soil, what you can expect in frost dates, etc. either in gardening books specific to your area -- I find what I want in the local bookstore and then buy at half.com as much as I can to save $$. You can find frost dates and temperature information on line pretty easily. There's also probably a local extension office which could giveyou great help and that's what our tax dollars pay them to do, so utilize them. Good luck on finding that piece of soil to call your own.

Been remote here in N.E.Arizona for 16 years. Satalite tv, satalite internet, solar and finally wind power. I am at 6,000 ft by the way. Growing seasons come a little later but they do come. You may want to start with raised bed gardens, as they help you control the soil much better. Once you move out, be sure to always stock pleanty of food and water, as you can get snowed in for days and even weeks at a time. When it snows hard, take a broom and carefully knock the snow off the dish.

Val , there are a couple of things to consider, A simple green house works wonders and one attached to the house is even better because of the availability of heat. That can keep your growing season pretty long. I'm pretty familiar with the pacific northwest. What part are you looking at?

Val, satellite internet is a good option, UNLESS you need to use encryption software. Then it slows to dial-up speed.
I work from home and have to use encryption to log onto my company's network. So that nixed satellite. But we do have a weak cell phone signal, so I got a signal booster; basically a repeater tower inside my home with an antenna outside, pointed at the cell tower. Works well, and only $80 one-time purchase. They don't work if you have 0 cell signal, though.
We believe the Lord held our house for us while we were looking in another direction. Someone had made an offer on it, but couldn't get financing. We made our offer and were first in line when his contract expired. The Lord has just want you need, waiting for you out there.

Val,
Sorry to read that you are leaving. I don't know what happened, and it is none of my business, but I wish you would re-think your decision. You could learn alot here from others and if someone offended you, just choose to no longer read their posts. That is what I have done over the years. When someone offensive comes on board I choose to ignore their postings when I come to them. Blessings, firegirl

I think Val felt the wolf introduction issue got too intense. I in fact was part of that. I sent her a pm asking her not to leave for the second time. Hopefully other will ask her to stay as well.
