About a year ago I started to really be careful who got my money. Ive always saved and shopped around for a bargain, but I've been going beyond that.

I finally decided that gillete, and shick, and others had had enough of my cash and broke down and bought a straight razor.

After using it for a year I can't understand why anyone would ever want to use a disposable.

It's a much closer shave and my skin feels so much cleaner and refreshed after each one.

Yes, the first few times I used it I looked like I had bumped into a shredder, but, now as an old hand as long as I do my part I come away knick free.

Any other men (or ladies) here use them? or wanted to?

I highly recommend it. Especially if you consider the cost of disposables.

I try not to buy anything "disposab le" anymore.

I tried on a few years back (teenager) and got a nasty cut. I'd love to try it again as I'm tired of going through disposables, too.

Where's the best place to buy one? What brand?

Yeah I did as well the first few times I used one. *I had to train my muscles not to slice but to scrape then it was easy from then on.

As for brand I'm the wrong person to ask. *I looked on the internet for some and they wanted ALOT of money for them. *I mean some of them were several hundred dollars. *I bought mine at Gun shows. *The one that comes to town here has a knife dealer that carries them. *Used of course, some are collectible, i.e. with advertisements on them, etc. *The cost of the ones I buy range from $25 to $70. *I am trying to get a few in good shape so I can rotate them and dont have to worry about ever buying anymore. *I'd recommend one made in Germany or England they sem to be the best of the ones I own. *Avoid Stainless its a bear to sharpen and if you take care of it rust isnt a problem anyway. *

As for blade selection I'd recommend the 5/8ths or 3/4 blade and make sure that both corners are rounded. *They make ones that you'll see that one corner is squared off... Thats for trim work around ears, and beards etc.. * If you try to shave with that like I did you will ALWAYS cut yourself..

I found a bunch of realy nice ones at the local thrift stores , even got a leather strap to sharpen them at a thrift store. A lot of them were missing one side of the handle so I just took the blade off and made a deer horn handle. I have been using them on and off for years,

I've been using one for 10 years,I cut myself once in awhile but not bad not on the neck but on the jaw line, there is alot of people around her thinks I'm nuts for using one, thenI tell'em their nuts for buying blades.I did remember in Lehman's they sold a disposable blade sharpener.

If you are hesitant to try, or need technique tips go to youtube.com and search for straight razors. Alot of videos showing how different people use them and care for them.

This one clip shows a old barber stropping the razor and you cant believe how fast that old timer can move that thing.

I love mine. straight razor that is. The last time i checked i didnt have an old timer of my own. I need to see if i can find one.

Yeph, Martin turned me on to the Rolls a year or two back and am quite happy with it. You can get some good shaving soap and brush at Walmart cheap as well. I figure shaving daily with a bar of soap in an old coffee cup lasts me 6 months so the savings is considerable.

You get to be one of my palm bearers when I slit my throat on accident hahah. I can just see a violent sneeze shoving a bit of neck into the barely-semi-safety-nearly-a-straight-razor blade.

By chance know of a place to get new blades? http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/3541/Rolls_Page.htm has a listing, but as the page is 7 years old... I figured the contact info for new ones would be invalid, and sure enough the email address given is no longer in service.

I finally looked at that link for rolls razor. Just an early version of a "safety razor" looks to me. Defeats the purpose. you still have to buy blades for the thing.

I'll stick with my good old fashioned straight razor. bought it once and wont ever have to again.

HUH?

How hard did you look? LOL

The Rolls has a permanent blade that's resharpened.

When it was in production they offered extra blades in the event you might BREAK one... but it has a strop and hone built into the case, and a sharpening handle that makes sure you get the precise angle for best edge.

I`d be wary of modern imports. Some of these blades have inclusions in them, seems to appear when you dress and strop the blade, that will open you up like you were doing it on purpose. There seems to be a period of serious practice on facial skin. Back when I used to use Zwickey blades on my arrows, I could do a really excellent job shaving the hair on my arm with those babies! I used to do the same with my old Bowie knife after sharpening it. The skin on the face doesn`t seem to be as forgiving.

I now own 3 :), 2 with strop and hone, one with strop only :)
