I know that this has been brought up in the past, but not for a while, I think- does anyone belong to the "Freecycle", group on yahoo? I sometimes find excellent stuff. You sometimes have to be able to hit the road fast in order to get your booty before someone else does. That makes it more fun.

I tried to join a local freecycle but my 'application' was rejected. So not sure what their criteria was - maybe they didn't like my email handle?

I use my local Freecycle a lot--mostly to give stuff away. The only useful thing we got through it was a ping pong table. Other things--an old rocking chair, bags of clothes--turned out to be garbage when we picked them up.
It's okay though because I really like giving stuff away. It's a great way to clear clutter out of the house, and it's fun to give things to people who need them. The last thing I gave away was an almost new microwave. Even for small things like magazines and books, somebody will come pick them up and then I don't have to feel bad about throwing them out.

LOVE,LOVE,LOVE it! :)
We have given sooooooo much stuff away. I have been able to give away formula that my son can't use anymore to other families that have disabled children ($300 per case - I was NOT throwing it out), we have been able to get a tiller, manure, straw, a brand new bandsaw, a pool table, basketball hoop, and canning jars.
That has just been this summer.
We put out our rummage leftovers, we had people fighting over them! LOL!

I'm a member of our local Freecycle, have been for about 4 years. I've given away lots of things that we lost the need for, and gotten quite a few things that I could use. Recently I aquired a small rabbit hutch which was converted into a chicken tractor, a 1/2 ton vanload of good firewood, and a wonderful old tredle sewing machine for the mrs.
The only thing I find annoying about FC are some of the requests, "wanted-couch and loveseat, tan or brown, good condition, please send pics"....sure, it gets used/abused like anything else, but its a great concept and does a lot of good for some people who cannot otherwise afford things they need.

Absolutely love it. We've given away a bed, futon and miscellaneous stuff and gotten a foosball table, firewood, etc.
What a great system!
rockymtngirl, check the requirements on the site page or rejection notice. Some state that you need to live of work in a certain zip code or to email the list owner with that fact, etc.
FWIW, if you live on the edge or work in several areas, don't forget to subscribe to the Freecycle group from that area as well.

We have offered and donated a few things since joining.
What kills me and ticks me off about it is some of the things people ask/beg for. Asking for a washing machine is one thing, but when your asking for a Play Station, or a TV because you need one in your bathroom... ::)

I use craigs list for giving and getting free stuff or low priced deals. This week a tree service down in town gave me all the wood I could haul in my truck and trailer. They even loaded it and were glad and thanked me for hauling it away. I see several old hot tubs each week that people want hauled off. I found a nice small tube that the guy helped me load, but the pump and filter had been cracked due to freezing. but I find another tub for free that is the wrong size but has a good pump and filter.

Guess I timed out on this thing or something as when I first tried to reply to this thread it said I needed to register. LOL Didn't know it had a timer, I've been here at least an hour but mainly just reading.
I tried to register for Freecycle but couldn't remember the info I needed to do so. Without a good car, or home
'net access at that time though it wouldn't have mattered all that much as I wouldn't have been able to go get anything. DD found the car she drives on Craigs List when she and her hubby first came back from HI. It was old but one owner and they had kept all their maintenance records and had already done many of the same repairs to it that she had had to have done to her first car. LOL Saved her a bunch of money that way.
