I have been looking for a supplier for these tablets that Mountain House uses in their ovens or a similar type. Does anyone know where you can buy a bulk supply of these from???? :?
Also, if someone knows how to make this mixture with these chemicals and would like to share the recipe.
Mt. House FAQ's state that it is:
What are the chemicals used in our Mountain Oven? It is a simple combination of powdered food grade iron and magnesium. When salt water is poured on the heater pad the Food Heater releases enough heat to warm-up a pre-cooked meal 100 degrees Fahrenheit in approximately 10 minutes. This patented technology generates an exothermic, electro chemical reaction. Spent heaters are biodegradable and easily disposed of as ordinary household watse, with no toxic materials.Close

I know that iron filings and epsom salts mixed with salt water will give off heat. I also know that you can create small amounts of electricity by placing a magnesium electrode and an iron electrode in a salt water solution. (the electrodes should not touch) you can wire the short lead of an LED to the magnesium and the long lead of the LED to the iron and it will light up for quite a while. That is called a salt water battery. I might be able to figure out a process if you could tell me what you need the heat pack for. There are commercially available hand warmers called "Hot Rods" that contain Iron powder, water, vermiculite cellulose, activated carbon, and salt.
I don't know what you need them for, but I have heated up food and kept it warm with the hand warmers.
