I live in suburban Denver (still!) and this last weekend my neighbor was taking out an area of his yard that had great mulch in it and putting in rocks (I detest rocks!). So he had several yards of this mulch and I asked him if he was going to get rid of it and he says yea - he was going to throw it all to the garbage pickup :o! Asked him if I could have some - he said take it all! So now I have some great clean mulch for my flower beds and rest I am using in the garden ;D I was SOOOO thrilled! This neighbor also gives me all their plums from their tree to make plum jam and the like.mmmm... I'm really getting into this free stuff where I can find it - have started checking craiglist too.

Love reading all your tips - I am trying out the 'free green onion' idea too!

That's great! It is amazing what some people will throw out. I wonder why your neighbour though rocks would be better than regular mulch--I've never understood that. The people who lived in our house before us put down rocks in the front garden, and I hate them! Every time I try to plant something I have to pick out all the rocks. Then when I put the rocks back, they're mixed in with dirt and look all messy... ::)

LOL, I have seen what you do with rocks walls0stone, and it's a lot prettier than some bits of crumbled up pebbles dumped in someone's garden. :)

Actually, I love rocks as an accent to a garden, but NOT used as mulch.
