Here's a great site:
http://www.prohaircut.com/at-home-hair-cut.htm
I've been cutting my own hair for years - and people are surprised that I'll even attempt it myself. The good news is, if you've never tried it, that the hair styles now are so shaggy and uneven, that even if you do a terrible job of it, people will think you're just keeping up with the style.
I prefer mine a bit more even, and as my hair grows slowly, I don't trust the professional hair cutters not to take off more than I've asked for.
I have one very good pair of fiskars that I keep only for hair cutting. They come apart for sharpening, and I keep them VERY sharp! It really does make a difference!

I agree Carol Ann.... I gave up on hair cutters..... When I was a kid my uncle cut my hair or the neighbor down the road cut my hair or when my daughter took an interest in it she cut my hair....then she cut all her brothers hair....If I go in and ask for what I want they just seem to do what they want.... So I took up cutting my own hair.... if I need a bite of shaping my husbund is great with the clippers and trims up the neck real nice....My hair looks just fine and it didn't cost me anything but a bite of time .....Cassie

I have done this a long time. Sometimes dh has demanded I go and get a 'cut.' But the style never holds for more than 4 weeks anyway. And my hair is somewhat curly, so it holds a 'style' for one day and then goes back to its wavy essence.
I just grow mine shoulder length and cut it in sections. It's hard to explain, but I divide the back in half and bring it forward; then cut that off on both sides; then the hair length on the sides by my face is cut as well to a little different length and at a slight angle. So a total of four cuts are made. I don't have bangs.
I think some of it may depend on your hair type. Really straight hair or shorter hair may need more of a professional cut?
I had seen a vacuum hair cutter once. It was an attactchment thing you stuck on a vacuum and it would cut the hair all over your head to one length. It had to be fairly short, though.

I had my wife cut my hair once.
Once.
It looked like I had been chased, knocked down and had my head chewed by a pack of dogs.
I stopped traffic when I walked down the street.
I had a homeless guy walk up and hand ME a dollar. ;D
Actually. the barber did pause a little too long when he looked at my head. I wound up getting a buzz cut.
What is it the Israeli's say? Never again... No, my friends...Never again.

Being military it sure saves the $$$$ every year to cut your own- not like there is a wide range of styles either. :) #2 on top, #1 on sides. woohoo 2-3 haircuts a month at $10 each on base vs the $14 for a set of clippers every other year makes a big difference in the lil wallet.
Then factor in we now have five kids in the house and 4 of them are boys between 5 and 11 the savings could almost be a car payment! :)

;D Yep, I have been going to the same barber for the last 40 years – my lovely wife Lindawoman! That is at least $7,000 or so over the years I’m thinkin’.
Besides, the only difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is two weeks…

Yes, I fully agree with you annie. EVERY lady should look as good as
they can to keep their ego in good shape as a very real part of their
overall health.
To that end....my wife has cut my hair and all 4 of our boys, when
they were home, so that there would be spare money for her to
visit the beauty parlor to get that perm & hair cut when she wanted
to go. This has kept her bright eyed and beautiful for the 45 yrs
we've been together. ;D ;D

Tightwad just about the time I think you have no social redeeming qualities you come up with something like this.
That was a good thing BTW.

I've been cutting my hubby's hair since we first were married, money was really tight, so I started cutting it and he has never been back to a barber. I trim my hair in the front, but trying to get to the back I'd rather not do, so I go to a professional for my own. ( I don't trust hubby to do it, but when I use to frost my hair, he would pull the strands through the cap for me. ;))

Over 35 yeaqrs ago my lady decided to become a beautician. She went to school, but didn't do it professionally for very long after graduation. Still she cuts my hair and we have saved many times the cost of school. She also did her and my mom's hair and her sister's. Not a bad investment as I get a professional cut for free. ;D

I definitely want to try it! ;D

Well, I'm cutting my own right now. Live way out in the country and wasn't having much luck finding a hair cutter that didn't just whack it off pretty much like they wanted to no matter what I said. Then I found a girl to cut it at a shop out here in the sticks less than three or four miles from the house. She did a good job, and with tip, I paid her $16.00 for the cut plus $5.00 or sometimes $10.00 (at Christmastime). She only works part time and she began to be impossible to get in touch with. She was never in the shop when I called; then the home phone # she gave me to call for appointments was disconnected, then the cell phone # didn't work either. So, I cut it myself this month. It grows real fast, so I can't keep it in one of those fancy styles; have to keep it about shoulder length and get it cut (or cut it myself) about every couple of months - by which time it has grown quite long. - I think the problem with this girl was that she was cutting some guys' hair and they would think nothing of handing her a $35.00 tip plus the cost of the haircut. I couldn't do that. Also, being a sixty year old woman, I think the younger gals sometimes sort of don't want to fool with us "over the hill" gang. She was very kind, though, and did a good job. It didn't take her fifteen minutes to cut my hair; it's such a basic simple cut. So, I just went from a pretty good shape to trying the best I could as simple as I could to try to trim off the longest tags of hair and keep the shape. :)

Yeah, I remember back when I had hair. Just enough left now to be a nuisance. I go to a local barber once in a while, but I think it is a nostalgia thing.

My son secretly has a beautiful head of hair, but early on he adored both his bald grandaddies and wanted to be bald like them. Ever since, he has kept insisting that his hairline has been receding - but the fact is that his hairline has not changed a bit from when he was a little kid. He was lucky and didn't inherit the bald gene from me. His Dad has a thick head of hair. He's now forty-one and keeps it all shaved off. I am sad about it because he has dark, coarse wavy and sort of curly, thick hair (which he doesn't want to fool with if the truth be known). This way he just showers and goes without having to blow dry or style his hair. - The shaved head for men has been "in" ever since Yul Brynner, and now even one of the top ten on "American Idol" has a shaved head. Actually, it looks pretty nice - except on Brittney Spears, who just isn't cut out for the bald head look. I think it's the whole femininity thing that she has going against her new hairlessstyle. 8) (See, this little guy is bald and cool in his little sunglasses!)

My hair is largely irrelevant now. I have an old electric clipper, long ago discarded the guard or whatever that was and just cut it all off. It takes awhile alone since I cannot see the back of my head but otherwise works fine.

I cut Bob's hair (well I really just use clippers on the fringe that goes around his head). I have had him start cutting my hair. He has done a good enough job for me. It beats paying $30 per haircut to just trim off the ends.

I am very frugal, but consider a haircut once a month to be a good investment. *It lets me get pampered a bit, and I consider that to be good for the mind as well. * My beautician only charges $14 for wash, cut, and style. She is 2 blocks from my work and cuts during my lunch break. :)
I do cut hubby's hair for him. *He hates to go to the barber.

I take my daughter to have her hair trimmed when she needs it. The lady that does it charges about $4. (I try to always tip a couple of bucks because she usually fits us in on short notice) I only get mine cut about twice a year. She charges $8 for me because I have more hair to mess with.
We usually cut my husbands hair with the trimmers in the spring ourselves.

hee hee!this brings back memories...i use to cut the whole familys hair.my hubby was always so fussy.he has these cowlicks in the oddest spots and a high hair line and he has hair that is tuff to do.so i would do the best i could.he would constantly look in the mirrors and fuss at me and fuss.one day i stopped when the hairdo was half done.i would not do anymore.i told him"i know why u want me to cut your hair! cause u cann't fuss at a barber like u do me!" ::)so he begged and begged and i had to relent.i told him he had to be nice.so he did.after that he was nicer.now i don't have to.i am so so glad.i do cut mine though.it is white mostly and long.i just trim here and there from time to time.i wear it in a bun.rae-dean ;)
