My wife came up with a profound statement when we were playing crib. I had already skunked her once and we were on our last game before I had to go to work. I was 40 points ahead of her and all I needed was two points to skunk her again and there was no way she could win. She delt the last hand, looked at it, put the cards down, and gave me the game. She then said, " there is no use wasting a good hand when I can't win." Now on the grand scale of things, it was just a game of cards but lets look at it in another way. Years ago in the working class world one could try hard, work hard, and be inovative. Then you would get a reward, be it a promotion, more money or some other kind of recognition. Thats part of what made this nation great. With the way management now looks at their workers, They don't seem to see people anymore, they see a buget glut which effects the workers, so why play a good hand when you can't win. Now I'm not making judgement on this type of thinking but when there is no motivation there is no creation. What do you think?

As a people we have been relegated to he soft chains of slavery. There are no whips or hobbling mind you, just the threat of destitution.

I was for close to 20 years a very successful residential electrical contractor. I never had any designs to become a large scale business. Yet the minute I did consider and had the client base to go a little larger, a few assistants, and helpers, the taxes, insurance, licensing, workman's comp....made it not worth it at all. No sense to take on all that extra stress and red tape.

Why waste a good hand.......?

Now due to current economic trends, and the relocation of myself to a more hospitable environment, rural, I still twist a little wire as I rebuild a new client base, but I have to work in the corporate slave world of "dollar type" retail as a jr manager to keep on paying the bills. THERE IS NOTHING REWARDING AT ALL IN THIS JOB...in fact it is rather humiliating and dehumanizing, the (cough cough)wages, and schedule, and then to see the EBT swiper's and welfare frauds live better than me. It seems the liars and cheats are rewarded, and the honest hard worker's are flogged and fleeced.

The pendulem will swing.....

Guys, my father was born in 1918 and I remember him telling me very similar stories when he was in his 50s and to his retirement at 64...

and then his telling me things changed so much since "back in the day" as he lived into his 70s...

I am not sure the youngsters don't face the same kind of frustrations ...when they too hit their autumn years...in 2030 and 2050 etc...

It may just be our own perspectives as we grow older.

Dennis you bring up an interesting thought: perspective.

every single event is viewed from the unique perspective of each individual which views that event.

In Roman, parents complained about the rebellionous of their kids. Taxes were also griped about.

One thing that time has taught us is that NO government ever lasts. Heck our own government changes every four or eight years! lol!

Will there ever be time when each family is allowed to simply live in peace? I have hope there will be. (although I also believe it will take a higher power to accomplish this)

Mankind simply likes to dominate their fellow man. (*Includes females also)

Greed, plain and simple: for power is an ugly truth in which most people allow it to rule themselves.

Yes so many things ARE different from when I was young: from cell phones to the increase in crime.

Seems the more things change, the more they remain the same. I honestly feel it's a cycle that keeps getting repeated. When the tipping point is reached in wretchedness, a great shift will occur and things will begin again: all seemingly better at first then escalating faster towards evilness. Each cycle spinning tighter and getting shorter, until the "Greatest" of all "shifts".
