I learned a lot just watching how they did things around their farms.
I also just learned (not in the film) that many Amish have small solar panel installations on their farms these days...they truly are the people that will do the best if SHTF!

Everyone must understand there are diffn't kinds of Amish just as there are diffn't kinds of Lutherans, Baptists, etc..
They differ in the "worldly" thing they allow and what they don't. Not all AMish would allow a solar panel, but I know some Amish who have one to recharge batteries. Some Amish allow for battery operated lights on their buggies, some don't.
Some Amish have gas lines piped into their homes for mantle lighting and gas refrigerators. They have airlines in their homes and shops to run appliances and equipment in the shop. Some Amish have many and most of the conveniences some of the rest of us have, they just have to go to more trouble to get and have it because of them not being hooked to REA.
The Amish, I am afraid, will be in a sinking boat with most Americans if times get tough. It's just their boat won't sink as fast.
Our Amish neighbors rely on rural water for all their water. Yet some of us "English" still have a well and cistern. Our neighboring Amish rely on an engine to drive their compressors on their milk tank, to run their shop equipment, to bale hay, to cut their wood, etc. etc. and they are a very "low church" Amish group. They wouldn't allow for gas refrigerators, but they all have kerosene stoves in their kitchen.
So, lest we get an overly idealistic view of the Amish that is simply not true, one must realize just how much they are dependent upon petroleum as we are, as well as other things. I wonder where the neighbors would be if the rural water one day didn't run.
I'm afraid the Bible is right today more than ever when it says no man lives or dies unto himself. We are all dependent too much upon what we must get from others for survival.
that site is great...there is lots of awesome documentaries on unique american cultures.....if you ever wanted to know what a real Cajun is other than "cajun chicken" from some restaurant , Alan Lomax made a great documentary on the Cajun culture...check it out..

You are absolutely right. I've been watchin these videos on this site for a couple of years. Many of them, like the excelletn Buller film on the AMish which was the intial post, are dated. It has been well over twenty years since that movie was made. Many changes have come down the pike since then.
Many of the other videos are even older than that, from the 70's , One can watch them with a note of nostalgia for how things were, and are no more. Sad.:(
