went today to a junk store that had advertised in the paper and bought a box of pint jars for canning. Then I scored a major canning supply score! I was told our church had found a bunch of canning jars while cleaning out a closet and that they may still be there. After a few emails and phone calls, I was at the church loading up seven dozen quart jars. They had more but I couldn't move the boxes because they were so heavy. I called the other family that had expressed interest in the jars and they said they weren't planning on canning and that if I wanted the rest of the jars they would bring them to me. YES!!! I'm going to give a donation to our youth group for the jars since they would have sold them in the yard sale they are hosting in June.

It must be a 'girl thing'. Why does that never happen to Me ???
I have an aunt who was buying lids at the grocery last fall and a very elderly lady tapped her on the shoulder and asked if she needed jars. My aunt followed her home, helped her unload her goceries, and the lady gave her 6 dozen Quarts and 4 dozen Pints in the (real, not the plastic-wrapped) boxes that they came in!
Now, I spend a few minutes in the canning supplies when I go shopping but, no such luck. >:(
What gives? :)

:D Keep trying Ozark! I've found some really great contacts at yard sales also. A smile and kind word can really get people to open up. One of the nicest ladies I've ever met I met at a yard sale by asking about the sewing machines she had stored in her basement where she was selling out of.
Dh and I have learned that the faster you get over shyness and fear of embarassment, the faster you gain knowledge and make great contacts!
Of course, maybe you're right and it's a woman thing! :P

Great score!
We've always been lucky at finding jars here in Ohio. It seems that every goodwill/ second hand store we walk in has boxes of jars pretty cheap. We've found LOTS at yard sales as well. It was a few years ago, but we went to a barn sale and drove home with over 50 pint and quart jars for a grand total of $5. We got there late and they were about to go to the trash can. Plus we've gotten quite a few from my parents and their friends who no longer can but luckily saved the jars. I also know a person here who posted a "wanted" ad on their local craigslist for canning jars and ended up with a carload for $20. We havent had to give that one a shot yet, but its definitly worth a try! ;D

Sweet!!!! I just got a bunch on freecycle. Someone had posted the offer 2 times before I was the only one who responded on the second go around. People just don't know what they are missing!!!! So fo rthose of you looking for a canning jar score..... FREECYCLE! sign up, offer something you want to get rid of, old polyester clothes or something and then ask for canning jars.
