Hi there,

I'm interested in small-scale steam engines...just starting to learn about this, so, forgive me if this is a really dumb question...but could I use a cast iron piston pump such as the one in the attached picture in a steam engine? If so, what modifications might I have to make? What safety precautions? I would be interested in hearing any of your opinions on this, or, if you have any better ideas on how to get started in this.

Thanks,

Jake

You may want to look at the backyardmetalcasting.com site and do a search for myfordboy on youtube. Both have some model steam and hit or miss engines.

The valving is the bug in using a pump for a steam engine.

A gas engine with the cam action changed would be simpler - 1:1 on the cam gears or a grind on the cam with 2 lobes. The other problem is the separation of the crankcase oil and condensate - so pick a pressure oiled engine.

The boiler is a good deal more complicated but hot water pressure washers have the parts needed.
