View Full Version : Anyone here like dollar/close out stores?
If so, which one?
I find some pretty decent buys @ Big Lots. I thought Dollar General wasn't worth the drive over there. Before I scope out the rest, does anyone have any recommendations on these -- good buys there?
I like biglots too, but some things our dollar tree has that are ok.. Also Freds, a store similar to big lots usually has ok deals

I've found that for many things Dollar General and Big Lots have pretty much the same thing for the same price.
There is a Dollar Tree not too far from us that is really nice, they have a large grocery section,as well as all the normal dollar store items.
Near here is also a store called Tuesday Morning, they have a lot of the higher end disco'd items.....we got a $90.00 knife set there for $20.00........and a few other items that were a fairly good deal.
Other than that I pretty much stick to thrift stores, there are a lot of them around this area.
For groceries I either shop Kroger(double coupons) or Aldi, and not much of anywhere else.

Tuesday Morning....great store!
Big Lots...Wonderful!
Dollar General and Family Dollar...good for hygiene items and hair bows and sewing notions.
Dollar Tree, Everything $1.00, etc....stationary, knick-knacks, hair accessories, occasioanl surprise buys (found some of my favorite and usually VERY pricey name brand lipstick at a local Dollar Tree)
1/2 of 1/2 Store...local place, dunno if they are anywhere else....Great place for clothes, small appliances, sheets, towels!

Dollar Tree for sure has my vote. Very good quality for toiletries and all.
Dollar General is good but they never have anything restocked here. They do have good vitamins if you catch them before they're gone.

We also have a scratch/dent store here... I bought a tv once for $80 that I saw in walmart a few months later for $349..... I also bought a case of tuna that most cans were dented for about 1/8 the retail price ... they have great stuff, just some is scratched & some dented... but they have everything you can imagine !! I did once tho buy a case of canned roast beef & one was spoiled, but I took it back & they not only refunded my $$ they also gave me an in store credit for the full case price tho all I had returned was one bad can !!!
So be sure to check those types of stores out too !!!

I wish there was a scratch and dent or salvage store near here. There aren't........the nearest one is about 150 miles away.

The town I lived in before had a Big Lot's, and I liked it mainly for their foodstuffs...I'd go there to buy canned sardines and oysters, the gourmet-style cookies/chocolates, and jars of pickled okra/olives/etc...basically just the stuff that was insanely expensive at other places. They also had decent prices on dog toys and treats. Other than that, I sometimes go to Dollar Tree or comparable places for deodorant and household cleaning supplies.

Big Lots/Odd Lots is about the only place I ever find anything worth buying... the stuff at dollar store, dollar tree, dollar general... is generally junk (except for the name brand consumables that are branded with the dollar logo, thats worth it if you like name brand). Plus a lot of that stuff is stamped "CHINA" and what with all of the mess lately with Chinese goods... yeah.

We have Ocean State job Lot in S.E. New England. You can pick up some good buys, depending on what your looking for. The key is to keep an eye out for the new stuff. Sometimes it's a very good deal, so when others find out, the race is on.

Not since everything in them comes from CHINA anymore...will not risk the lead, melamine, asbestos, etc., to save a few pennies....

Kids undies are cheaper at big lot than anywhere else. I started buying them there for my granddaughter because either the daycare or my son and his wife threw away the stinky panties rather than deal with the mess. Like I would ever have dreamed of not washing underwear because they pooped in them. Just today I bought my grandsons three pairs of boxers for 3.00. I will use them with T-shirts for summer p.j's when they spend the night. I refuse to pay 15 or more for spiderman p.j's because they are cute.
I bought the boys winter p.js at dollar general's end of the season sale for 75% off.
I have to admit that I never shopped at Family Dollar or Dollar General until we moved outside of town. Now that is all that is nearby. I have found some real bargains.
