And know how to use it?
Howdy.
Personally, I can't imagine living anywhere without at least one good gun. What it was might be dictated by varying circumstances. Comments? OzarksJohn
P.S.
Can't help but think about some of Ayoob's writings here....

As a single mom with a daughter to protect, I made it my business to learn how to handle a firearm. Can't imagine not doing so.
On the other hand, I hope and pray and take precautions with the idea of never, ever having to use it.
When I took a handgun class there was an awful lot about preparing yourself mentally for the possiblility of taking a human life. I can hardly shoot a deer for venison, so I had a really bad time with that, until I thought of someone nasty trying to hurt my daughter. All hesitation vanishes at that point.

For some reason I don't think the JBT will believe that.
Way to many gun owners having boating accidents. :)
I sold all mine a long time ago.
To who?
Sorry didn't get their name..

With the way people are today, and it only seems to be worsening and more brazen, I think it's foolish to believe in the "kindness of human nature", given the daily headlines, religious beliefs notwithstanding.
Why do people purchase homeowner's insurance? Do you PLAN on bad things happening? NO, but they DO occasionally; you buy it JUST IN CASE you need it. You don't PLAN for bad things to happen, but if they do, you're loss will be minimized, if not completely negated. Same concept with ANY weapon one purchases/carries for self-defense.
I remember a funny story about a local Sheriff that attended a political luncheon with a group of liberal women as their guest of honor; one of the ladies approached the Sheriff, pointed at his sidearm, and asked: "Are you expecting trouble, Sheriff?"....He replied: "No, Ma'am, if I was expecting trouble, I'd be carrying my rifle". :D :D :D
"An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life."

I'd give up my guns, but then there's the whole subject of the king issue...so I think I'll keep them just in case.:sarcastic:

I gave mine up and took up knitting. But with that said , you would be surprised how much damage a loaded knitting needle can do

All kidding aside,
The gun is not going to be a persons issue. Getting past the realization that you will be required to do something that will kill and take another persons life is.
Once you can come to terms and grasp that reality, you are a lot further ahead.

Owning or not owning a gun is a personal choice. I do not want anyone telling me that I can not own a gun but I also dont want someone telling me that I have to.
Requiring that you own one is far more constitutional than requiring that you NOT own one. Just stirring the pot a might.};^)

I believe that anyone, except felons and crooks and the mentally retarded and deranged should be able to buy a gun. Its your right as a American citizen.
But did you know that most people are more afraid of being stabbed to death than shot. Go figure. I guess that means "never bring a knife to a gunfight"
The disorder is called aichmophobia.

You know, I've read, and read, and re-read the Constitution, The Bill of Rights, etc., and NOWHERE do I find ANYTHING about health insurance.....or the "guarantee" of happiness (just the pursuit of it).....or any mention of mandating that private citizens ARE REQUIRED TO BUY ANYTHING the federal government wants you too....seems a federal judge agrees with that position, too....
Oh, but there IS that pesky Second Amendment.... :D

Howdy.
Been thinking a lot about the absolute bare bones necessities of life a lot recently and just what you can afford to do without. I'm learning a lot... So far a gun ain't one of them.....OzarksJohn

Tough to have a homestead and be as self sufficient as possible and not own at least a rifle to protect your chickens and bagging the occasional bunny that is wanting to break fast on your garden....!

Qwerty. You need to qualify your statement about the "mentally retarded" They are actually called developmentally disabled. I'm a supervisor who has 17 DD adults Who just made 2.3 million for the company I subcontract for. Many of them with the proper training could handle a firearm as good if not better then other adults I have encountered. And they to are citizens with the same legal rights as you or I. With that said I agree that there are some who are not capable of having one, just don't lump them all up in one group.

He means, people with political opinions progressives don't approve of, are mentally retarded and should not be allowed to own a gun. Didn't you listen to Obama's gun speech?

There are those who feel they do not need to own a gun because the police will protect them. These same people are also living in a delusion, for ask any police officer and they will tell you they are not in the business to protect any individual. So I guess these people can say they can afford to live without guns. And to them I say, "good luck, you're going to need it".
As for me, I choose to live on the side of self protection!

"...ask any police officer and they will tell you they are not in the business to protect any individual."
It's not just the cops that say that, the Supreme Court said that.
Another Supreme Court ruling that chaps my tail, is that in a police investigation, the cops are allowed to lie to obtain information. If you ever have a police "interview," never take what a cop tells you to be truthful.
