I used to able to get t-shirts for $1 a piece. Now all t-shirts are $2.50. Other prices seem higher too. :'(

While Goodwill claims to be a not-for-profit business I don't believe it because they are far more expensive that any of the thrift stores in town to the extent that we don't shop there anymore. You've got the money, you've got the power. Spend it like you mean it.

I think the Salvation Army is the only non for profit.
I don't have a salvation army retail shop in town :-/

Every now and then I can find a good deal at Goodwill. Yesterday, I wetn (I go during my lunch hour) and picked up a beautiful warm button down shirt for .99.
It was $4.99, but all green tagged clothes were .99 each. I'm sorry to say that they didn't have anything else that I wanted/fit me.
I do like their book selection, though. You can rarely beat paperbacks for $1.29 each.
I wish there were more thrift store options here as well.

I've never been a fan of Goodwill except when I was growing up, they were cheaper in the early 90s. Salvation Army too back then seemed better.
We have a local church-owned thrift store that sells stuff very cheap and I prefer to donate my clothes to them, or buy clothes that I need. They also feed the hungry and have a special program for poor moms who need formula.
A shirt at our local SA is about 3 bucks, it's about 1.25 if not cheaper at the local church thrift.

Around here there are so many thrift sotres, that you could shop them all day.
The Salvation Army near here has raised their prices to the point that only those who don't need financial help can afford to shop there.I was in there last week, and the plain t-shirts were prices $4.99!!! A pair of dress slacks was $9.99!!!
I like to go to World Mission Thrift and VOA(Volunteers of America) stores........I can often get nice pants for work for $1.50 or less, and hubby gets brand new work pants for $1.99.........

Sure you can... I often pay 1-99 cents for books on amazon... sure then you gotta pay a few dollars shipping though. If it wasn't for the shipping it'd be cheaper!

I can't buy clothes from goodwill or salvation army... nothing in my sizes. Ever. And lately (past year and a half) just about any non-textiles at any of the few dozen that I visit around town... the non-textiles have been more expensive than buying the same item brand new at target/k-mart/walmart... unless I go to the Goodwill outlet, now you can't beat those prices, but then again you've always got a hundred or more people in that place to compete with... but the best thing I ever got there was an almost complete encyclopedia set for 9$ (two volumes missing)

I have been horrified at the prices at Goodwill. I hate to hear about Salvation army too!
We have church thrift stores around where I live, I am going to hit them up for stuff, I bet it is cheaper.
You can probably find some in your area if you check Thrift stores in the Yahoo yellow pages.

My young'un goes through clothes so quickly I have to buy clothes at the local ministry-run thrift store. I can get a grocery bag full of children's clothes for $2. I used to buy my jeans there but my cousin had a yard sale a while back and I stocked up after her sale was over and she was ready just to get rid of the clothes. I always check out the pictures on the wall and the handbags while I'm there. I got a cool looking embroidered one that is big enough to hold a ton of stuff for $2. It also pays to get to know the people that work there. I lucked out and used to go to church with one of the women who works there so she calls me if something she knows I'd like comes in.
I've quit shopping at Goodwill other than men's shirts. Their prices are just too high and it takes hours to go thru the racks which are packed so tight you have to pull an item out to see it. I can usually buy new at Sears, Penneys or Younkers at 75% to 90% off sales and get good quality. There are a couple other thrift shops around but I've never had any luck there. Partly I think because I wear size 12 which is very average and therefore quickly very picked over.
