Not sure if it's platinum or silver in catalytic converters, one of the two, I believe.
I've also heard that there is silver in some component of a vehicle's airbag. Not sure if that's true, but I seem to remember a relative in California telling me that they were coming up missing from people's cars for that reason.
I know for sure that there is silver in the x-ray film that I use at work, at higher concentrations when the film is unexposed, but still present even after exposure/developing...they reclaim it by incineration. The silver that it loses during developing can by found in the fixing agent (basically acetic acid)...if you put a piece of copper pipe/a penny/etc. in the fixer, the silver will build up on it over time. We use a reclaimer that filters the silver out of the acid, to save time and capture it more effeciently.

Are you thinking of getting into the reclamation business?

You want precious metals. Try aluiminum, my wife and I save every bit of aluminum we can and in a year we can get in excess of two hundred dollars. sounds small but that's just from our personal consumption.

If you keep an eye open aluminum is everywhere, I carry a plastic bag in the car so if I stop somewhere and I see cans laying about I go pick them up, same thing at work. I put a box near me where I work and get cans.

If I lived on some country road, I think I would make some sort of target with a hole in the middle with a sign urging folks to hit the bullseye with their aluminium.

Heck if I didn't live in the city I might try it on my front yard.... :D

I also forgot to mention, there was a guy I used to work with who took care of household hazardous waste at the local landfill...people would drop off old 20# propane tanks they didn't want, and he would purge them, take the brass valves off, and save them. He was supposedly making decent money selling the brass to the local recycler.
