Hi there everybody... I am looking to possibly purchase a Hamm radio or something simular for my spread. Does anyone know of a good supplier, and some good information on them.

Gotta head to work right now...but will be checking back:)

Ask around about a ham club in your area. It will be a bunch of old codgers (e.g., guys my age <G>) that cackle when they talk to you. There will probably be a ham fest not far from you, sort of a flea market for the guys who talk on the phone while trying to get their radios to work so they can talk for free.

You can pick up good used equipment for pennies on the dollar, and some will give you stuff just to get you interested in the hobby. Super friendly people, and very willing to help you get started.

Well certainly not interested in joining a group. Kinda a loner...and like it that way.

Interestly enough though, my hubby been locally searching for one.
One place said he was the third to inquire this week, a pawn shop said he was tenth person to ask about Hamm this week.

I think a lot of folks out there are thinking ahead.

Hubby ended up getting a CB for now...until we can find a decent used Hamm.

Thanks though:)

Oops, my bad, Manda. Didn't intend to imply that you should join a ham club, only to seek one out for some good advice and leads for where to pick up some used, but quality, equipment.

So sorry Grumble...didn't mean to come off grouchy:)

Just seems every other moment of the day, someone wants you to jump into social mode, join this and that, whats your hair color?
Which isn't a bad thing per se if you like that sort of thing....but since I work in an environment dealing with a large groups of whiny people I seem to defend my little haven I call home, a little too much sometimes.
I do not socialize beyond a keyboard lately, helps me to retain what little sanity I have left. I meant no harm really:)

On topic I think we are going to go with a far reaching CB. Seems more pratical. I am not using it for entertainment, just to pick up chatter of whats occurring around me, and if possible to warn others of trouble in my area.

If the world really does fall apart I will too busy with mine and my area to worry about whats happening across an ocean anyways.

Howdy.

You should go to ARRL website first. That's your best first stop for all things HAM related. For local or regional you probably want 2 meter rigs in order to utilize the repeaters in your area. A typical police scanner can allow you to listen to HAM traffic of this type. Long range HAM stuff is kinda the next level up from 2 meter operation. It also requires different equipment too. You can monitor (listen to) lots of this traffic on a shortwave receiver that has SSB (single sideband) capability. Getting a shortwave receiver is a very good idea for "inquiring minds that want to know". Universal Radio has a great website and selection. Good luck. BTW, CB is good, but somewhat challenged these days unless you are bending several FCC rules in your equipment. It just ain't what it used to be....OzarksJohn
