We had lots of sale items and I got beef, chicken and ham. I'm freeezing a lot for later use. Around the holidays is a god time to stock up.

I go through the grocery sale ads on Wednesday, that's when we get them, and figure out my menus based on sale items and food that may need replenished in storage. I also check my Price Book (a small notebook where I log the prices of foods) to see if it's a "real" bargain. All sale items are not ALWAYS a bargain. Tuna at the grocery store, even at a discounted price, is nearly always more expensive than the tuna at Aldi's - for instance.
I was able to get a ham for 99 cents a pound this week - that's about as cheap as I can get any type of meat. I consider $2 or less a pound for meat a good price. The grass-fed beef/bison/free-range chickens I buy are NEVER a bargain price.
I did notice eggs, even on sale for a $1 a dozen, were considerably higher-priced this year than most Easters. They say it's because of the higher prices for the corn in the feed. Glad I can exchange a loaf of homemade bread for a dozen eggs (farm-fresh). Using free wheat, I can make a loaf of bread for pennies - what it cost to bake it.

Shamrock, We get the paper on Weds also. I don't keep a price book but kinda keep prices in my head. We have 4 large grocery stores to shop at and each one checks each others prices so we do pretty good at keeping prices down.
Safeway had hams for $.88 a lb. here. We live in Washington State.
