I'm out effective Friday..... I'm one of the 20000 people that got let go from Caterpillar. *I'm an Engineer, which will be hit harder in the next few months/years.
I saw it coming so I've been interviewing, but haven't heard back on them (one was just a few days ago, so there still hope, will follow up at end of the week)
Right now my plan is to go do some substitute teaching since I have prior teaching experience and good math/science skills
I also have an FFL so I sell guns online via my website....which gives me a few extra dollars....not much though.
I like the substitute teaching idea since I'm not officially tied down to any one thing....
anyone have other ideas for jobs that, like sub-teaching, don't have and set specific schedule?
i figure if i hit 3-4 different things part time at once I should be able to make ends meet until i get a normal job again.
any ideas are welcome :)

Sorry to hear about the lay off. :(
Sounds like you've got a plan though. We're trying to figure out things here as well...so if we come up with any great ideas to share, we'll let you know.

What kind of engineer are you? Where do you live. How much experience do you have? Are you willing to relocate?
Also: Put your resume on this site. I'd suggest joining it, too.

Good News! I think i dodged a bullet here folks....
I got a job offer today....on my last day at my other job.
i pretended to think about it :)
i am VERY VERY relieved. Caterpilar has laid off around 30,000 people (a mind boggling number of jobs in my opinion!) by now and I managed to luck out and get a job...
i'm very very very grateful
hopefully the rest of you in this situation have equally good luck!

tutoring. especially if there is a local college or community college you can post at. also places like sylvan learning centers hire individual tutors as well.
good luck. I heard about CAT and though of all my old buddies in central illinois who are heading for hard times.

I heard on the news, awhile back, that Cat could not meet the new emissions standards, that are coming, on their over the road engines, and still maintain the horse power, so they ended that branch. Anyone else hear something similar?

no, it wasn't that...I was in thier engine division...so i take it that i know a little.
The problem was that so many people bought the 2007 engines with the 2007 emissions standard that very few needed the 2010 engines (the next tier in the emissions standards) so there were very very few orders for trucks....because everyone had recent trucks.
that compounded with some emerging reliability problems (on tier 4 engines) made for short orders on 2010.
Cat decided to cut engine productions for 2010 models and instead made an agreement with Navistar for on highway.
I've had enough of the corporate world personally.... but thats where I'm stuck for a little while longer still.....
someday...

I do have some JD knowlage, we won't go that way.. I also have some awareness of CAT businesses in PA and NY. I interviewed with both Cleavland and Ransome as a salesmen in 2002. I also saw some info this morning that makes me think that large companies will hold back for a time and decide what they are going to build in the years to come. I understand that many trash and delivery trucks are slowly being replaced with Natural Gas trucks. My guess is that any people will hold back and then decide what works best, then hire again.
If we are to make great changes to our fuel and nation, then some people will be forced to also retool themself. two years ago, I'd only had 3 weeks experence with natural gas drilling, now it's an every day part of our equipment business.
