I live in s.w. Va. and I was wondering if there is any pulpwood mills exist. I am cleaning out some bull pines myself because i have seen the destruction jackleg logging comp. do. Does anyone remember pulpwood harvesting?

Try rualheritage.com you may find something there. They deal in farming and logging with horses.

Pulpwood industry is big around here. There's a mill over in the Big D (Fernandina Beach ;D) that makes cardboard boxes and paper bags.
There must be some in Va, too.

Howdy

Way back in the olden days, when I was a teenager. There was a post and poll saw mill near where we lived. They did all manner of treated decorative fence lumber, livestock fencing posts, clear up to super size high line poles.

I had a pickup, he had a chain saw. We would fell a truck load of post wood. Trim it up with axes and sell it for cash through the back gate of the plant.

Kept us in $ to chase girls with...................

Around here they chip a lot of it instead of loads of four-foot pulp wood, you see boxcars of chips.

I have an internet friend on another post that lives in S.W. Va.,. I'll E-mail her and ask if she knows. They travel a lot so she probably will.
Get back with you as soon as I hear from her.

Native87 -

You're fortunate you can do the cutting yourself - I had pulpers on my Ozark land 15 or so years ago, and what a mess! I also am pretty sure they took more wood than they paid me for. I know they took wood I told them not to take.

I'd drive around and look for clear cutting if I was you - and see if you can catch them at work, and ask where the mill is, or just follow their trucks if you can find them. They don't like to haul that heavy stuff too far, so that might work. Another souce might be your local free paper, if you have one. They often sell slabs & sawdust as a byproduct.
