With bow season just around the corner, I was wondering what everyone out there is shooting. I'm currently shooting a 55# Bear Montana longbow. I'm shooting aluminum shafts but have some cedar arrows on order.

Welcome to the forum RustyJr: I use a 60lb compound & carbon fiber shafts from WalMart. I have found the carbon express shafts to be of good quality and at a fair price. I use to use the bear razor heads. I have switched to a mechanical vortex. It does not cut through bone as well as some of the other one piece broad heads out there. I can honestly say that they have taken 2 very nice elk. They make a very large wound path. If you can place your shot you have most of the battle won. As far as other accessories on the bow. I kept my setup as simple as possible. I use an all metal fiber optic pin sight with a 3/16 inch peep, quick-tune arrow rest, beaver balls installed in the string and limb silencers. My release is a clam shell type & I use a loop on the string. The rest is time in the woods.

Thanks for the welcome recoilless. Ive been a member for a while but haven't been able to post because of email issues. Who is the manufacturer of your bow? I have a 50# Darton that I've hunted with a few times but haven't used lately b/c my longbow is lighter and easier to carry. You stand hunt or spot and stalk?

I am shooting a PSE 1000c series compound. I bought it used for 50 bucks. With some of the accessories that came with it I could not turn down the deal. When I test shot the bow it just felt good to me. I had been looking at a new bow for some time. The cost was holding me back. I just could not bring myself to spending that kind of money at the time. The up side of changing to a compound is I shoot more.
Prior to purchasing the compound I was shooting a Bear 52 inch recurve. The recurve weighed in a 52lbs. This was getting to be a lot to hold in some situations. It was turning me away from bow hunting. I was developing some joint issues and shooting the recurve was aggravating the issue. This is what turned me to the compound.
Darton makes good bows. One of my late hunting buddies put a lot of meat on his table with one.
I did not look at the date you joined the forum. You have been with it a long time, I apologize for the error. It must feel good to have communication back.

Had been shooting a 60# longbow I made.
Replaced that with 56# Kassai Raven horse bow.

No need to apologize recoil ;) , and yes sir it does feel good to be able to communicate again. I've got nothing against compound shooters at all. Some don't like crossbows either but I figure as long as you (or anyone with a bow/crossbow) is out there hunting (responsibly of course) that gives us one more person that can pass on the hunting tradition to the next generation.

I am with you on just getting out there and doing the deed. I enjoy hunting with a bow. I shall continue to use the compound as long as I can pull it pass the break point. Then I shall use a crossbow.
Good luck this year and all to come.
