Yest. we picked and washed a couple of fleeces from some ancient old ewes the kids had raised as bottle lambs years ago. They wanted something from the wool to remember them by. We wanted to send the wool to MN and have it carded for a quilt batt but the boy said he'd rather have a blanket.

Anyone know where you can get wool made up into a blanket in the US? I would consider sending it to Canada if I have to. I know a place in Alberta but you only get back a natural colored blanket and we'd like a colored one.

Consider having someone spin the wool into yarn then dye & knit or chrocet (sp) a blanket.

Have thought of the weaving part. Knitting or crochetting is out. While Mrs. and two daughters are capable of doing either, that's not a blanket but an afghan.

I'd love to take on a project like weaving a blanket on our loom but no one in this house has the time for that at present. Maybe in another twenty years after we retire from . ? . ??? Anyway . . .

you could felt the wool into a blanket, wouldn't take as long as weaving but it wouldn't be cleanable.

I admit I really don't know a thing about it! Anyhow, in my humble opinion, if you are going to use a wool blanket for quilt batting, what difference does color make? It does need to be washable in my opinion. :girl_wacko:

I was thinking about the fabulous old wool army blankets that my family used to have. Anyhow, here's this: https://www.google.com/search?q=100%25+wool+blanket&tbm=shop&hl=en&aq=f

We're not using it for batting or we would just get a batt made. There are a number of carders in the country. We want a blanket to use as a blanket. In fact, I have an old carding machine we haven't used in over twenty years but could card and make our own batt but the boy wants a blanket and not a quilt.

We pick up good old wool blankets at thrift shops all the time, wash them and then use them for liners in quilts we send over seas through a mission agency our church supports. We also use acrylic blankets or whatever we have but seldom are any of the mission blankets made with an actual quilt batt.

Yes we have some of those fabulous old blankets that my great grandmother had made up. They are a dark grey with black stripes but then she also had sent them black wool to make it. We don't have any black sheep so a natural colored blanket would be a rather ugly off white color. It wouldn't bother me, I slept under one just like that that grandma had made up but my teenage son would kind of like something with some color to it and since we've yet to find blue sheep, ;) we would like to find an outfit that would use our wool but dye it. :)

Also , we are not looking to buy a wool blanket; as I said in the OP we want a blanket made from our own wool from our sheep, a blanket and not a quilt, preferably a colored one, and I'd like to find an American company that can do it if I can.

Well, there I go again--sticking my nose in something I don't know anything about. Excuse, please!

Thanks for the link, but that's a California mill with a California price. I'd have to sell a few sheep to pay for one blanket. We've decided to send it to MacAusland's in Prince Ed. Is. Canada. They are very reasonable. The whole transaction will be less than a hundred bucks and we will get a queen sized blanket that is in the color we want. Sounds great so will let you know when we get the blanket back from them.

Oldtimer,
Depending on what part of the country you're from, there are historical parks that demonstrate spinning and weaving and may just give you a great price, or if you have any extra wool to trade, you may be able to barter. Years ago I worked a few summers at the Ozark Folk Center and they had a few spinners and weavers there. There are similar historical places around the country where you can find folks that need materials to demonstrate their arts for the public.

Well, I don't know of any such places and hey, seventy bucks for a blanket made exactly like we want it, I ain't complaining about sending the business to Canada. :)

I have a loom, if I was ambitious, I could weave it myself, but then I would have to piece it. That's the problem, few of these spinners and weavers would have a loom that could weave a queen sized blanket in one piece.

I let you know what the product looks like when we get it back.
