I was reading the posts about Goodwill and how their prices have gone up. I just started working for their competitor, Thrift Town. We are right across the parking lot from each other. Their prices are high here, too. We had a 50% off all clothing sale the other day and the total sales were $10,186!!

I've been there 2 months, they pay $6.30 an hour. I learned yesterday that I will have to be there a year before I get a raise of......25 to 30 cents an hour! I am breathless, but not from excitement.

I am over 50, have a hidden disability and am not willing to lie, have sex with the boss or tolerate abuse of any kind, so that limits the jobs I take. I have walked away from some wonderful jobs because they wanted me to do the above.

I am living in a small RV, I get a 30% discount on what I buy from the store (restrictions apply) and the folks I work with are great.

What would you do? Stay or cut bait and move on, in the hopes of finding a job that pays a living wage w/out the need to compromise?

This job offers benefits, but I am single, so $200 a month is taken from my check for taxes, and I live 30 miles away, so gas is another $100 a month. No one can afford the benefits. We do get occasional bonuses (up to $30 a week) based on store sales.

Please share your thoughts, I enjoy what I am doing, but the slave wages are problematic. The store has lost many good employees because of it.

A goodwill type store profit shares?!?!?!

You are better off getting a job at the Golden Arches flipping burgers, you'll start off making the same, and you can actually move up the ladder pretty quick... plus they help with schooling if you ever wanted to get a degree or even just take some classes for fun :) .

Really you have to be the judge, are you happy where you work, do the bills get paid? Are you wanting to save money for something?

If you are happy doing what you do, and pay the bills I'd stay. If not I'd at least move to fast food so you could have hopes of promotions.

Easy. Leave. You make far less than min wage once you factor in your gas expenses. Personally, I wouldn't put up with the wages.

I learned today that the corporate office in California is looking into upping the wages for the rest of us. They had to in Ca., cost them half a million dollars, but some new law required that they cough up more $ for those employees.

I am happy there, my car is paid off and since I am in an RV, my other expenses are minimal. But I have begun asking folks if they know of a decent job that I might be interested in. I won't take any action until after New Year's.

I'd say look for another, but keep this one until you find one you are sure will be better.

Yup, much as I like this job, I do need a living wage. The gov't says $13 an hour is the magic number, but this company watches the minimum wage ($5.85) closely and tries to pay just a tad more. For me to get to $10 an hour will take YEARS! And I don't have that kind of time. I have lived more years than I am going to live. ;)

Sorry about not getting to this sooner, after initially responding to you post with at length, a computer glitch didn't allow me to post.

Anyways, is there anyway in which you could find a job closer to where you live or move your RV closer to your job? That is assuming you like this job and want to keep it. Though as others have pointed out, there are likely better offers available with other companies, assuming you wish to climb the corporate ladder or attend educational courses.

Do you have any access to goods donated before they go on sale to the public?

If you get familiar with what sells well on ebay, you might be able to resell some things there at a profit.

Not sure how viable, but that's one idea...
