View Full Version : DIY book cover printing question
How does a person print words onto a hardcover book?
I'm going the do-it-yourself publishing route with a couple of my books. I've gone to several websites but haven't had any luck getting info on how to put the title on the cloth covered hardbacks.
Looking at other hardbacks, it looks like the letters are actually pressed or stamped into the cover material.
Any ideas?

Hot press lettering is the classic method, the down side is that the equipment runs 100s of dollars.
Heat transfer lettering may an answer - check your local graphics shops to see if they will 'job out' small runs.
The shops may have a suggestion - they know their equip -

My sister took her books to a printing shop and just paid for the publishing. They turned out really nice, and if they were popular enough the second printing was just paid for from the first run sales. Small printers will print like 50-100 books for you first run, then from those sales you can remake your costs and pay to print a larger order. She always did it that way.
Thanks for the advice. I really liked the link. There were tons of options.
Concerning having 50 to 100 copies printed by someone else, after looking around on the internet it seems possible to do it myself. Paper backs look easy to make. Hard covers could be too time consuming because it involves using thread. I'm going to give it a shot though and see how it goes. If the do-it-myself hard cover idea doesn't work out, I might revisit the idea of having a professional print them out.
Thanks again for the ideas.
