Looking for a Back Quiver Pattern

Hello, I am looking for leather patterns for traditional back quivers. Do any of you leatherworkers have one? Also, approximately how much hide will I need for one? I would love to try and make one that looks like Byron Ferguson's quiver. Can anyone throw me a bone? Thanks, Nacomis

I'd make a fabric mock-up so you'd have the yardage & get a good idea of how you want to put it together. Looks fairly straight forward, but then I've been sewing for >ahem< 50 years. I roughed out the pocket on the drawing under the photo. The brown line indicates the length (not width) of the side leather that gives the pocket depth. The oval is the bottom piece, and the circumference of that piece yields the width + a bit for the seam of the main quiver. The length looks to be 20-24". There are bands, not only for decoration, but for strength of the finished project.

What doesn't show are the reinforcement tabs that must be sewn over the shoulder straps to anchor them on.

All pockets, decorations, bands and straps should be applied to the body before it is whip-stitched to the oval base. Looks like there is one long seam up one side.

This is not a huge project, but it looks interesting, especially if you apply the beadwork and fringe as shown. I'd bet anything that they have reinforced the bottom oval with either double leather or even a plastic insert to make it wear longer. Points go down, and hunting points would wear like the dickens on a leather bottom to the quiver.

If you try this with no more pattern than I've presented here, make sure the fletching of your arrows isn't inside the quiver! That'll determine the length as much as anything.

I've sewn several longbow cases - this looks like a fun project, so it might be my next one!

Thanks, Rose - I can't edit it, either, or I'd delete it. Funny our firewall didn't catch that, as I did the search after work on a company machine. It was a cool picture, too, but boy do I HATE sites that spread a virus!!
