I bought a Janhome 5812 sewing machine today for $129.99 from Hancock Fabrics as it looks simple enough for me to use since I haven't sewn anything since the mid '80's or so and my daughter hasn't sewn since she was in school, probably in junior high in the early '90's.
I'm in hopes this is a simple enough machine to get back in practice on and to teach the granddaughters. What do you folks think, did I make a good decision?
I won't be making a lot of stuff, just some simple clothes for the girls and a few craft items. I also got 10 patterns, 5 Mc Calls and 5 Simplicity as they had them on sale at 5 for $5 for both brands. I don't like the other fancier patterns and I so can't afford full price for any patterns. Will be keeping an eye out at the thrift stores to see if I can find any patterns I like as most sell them for about a quarter each.

I hope you get along all right. I have run a sewing machine repair business as a hobby for the past twenty years. You get what you pay for in buying new sewing machines. I love old Singers, they're fairly trouble free, but newer ones aren't worth a hoot.
Pfaff makes an excellent machine, though they're expensive. If you don't buy one of the bottom two or three models of Pfaff, you should never have to buy another machine. Bernina makes a good machine with their Marie Osmond model.
I have never been fond of Janome. But if you aren't doing a lot of heavy sewing, it should work out. Best to your sewing ventures!

And if that doesn't work out, I have an extra Singer treadle you could have--can't ask for much simpler or dependable than those.
So why do I have 2 treadles?
I've been sewing on one for many long years. At one point I must have "complained" to my son-in-law that I couldn't do such and such on it, so he decided I needed a "newer" machine and bought me another one.
Makes a great plant stand.

Thanks for the advice oldtimer. I mainly want it for hemming up the legs of uniform pants for my 8 yr. old granddaughter. She wears a size 14 which means they are way too long and I'm tired of seeing her walk on her pant legs so I'm going to cut off a portion of the leg and put in a deep hem. Will be done in a semi-professional manner with a tiny 1/4" machine sewn him then the actual hem itself will be done by hand using a blind stitch. I still can't bring myself to completely hem them by machine no matter what, too old fashioned I guess.
Bought my a pajama pattern so I can make myself a second pair to wear this winter then a couple of pair with shorts and short sleeves for when it gets warmer. Also have an old fashioned apron pattern that I couldn't resist, some patterns for clothes for the girls and one craft pattern. Think I'm going to Wal Mart & see what I can find in their pattern section. I'm looking for one to make a bag to attach to my walker though I may go to a different Hancocks and get more of the 5 for $5 patterns.
After fighting my singer for way to long, my husband bought me a janome two years ago and I love it. would buy another one with out any hesitation. Good luck!

I haven't used my machine yet but I set up a 4 foot folding table and a couple of folding chairs by the kitchen window this morning and have been reading the owner's manual on it. With the material I bought yesterday, at a thrift store, along with the patterns I got when I bought the machine I'm ready to roll. Granddaughters have misplaced my thread, pins, scissors and so on so I need to replace them and get an ironing board and iron and I'll be good to go.
