I thought about buying one when they first came out.

Another handgun that costs $1000+, just to turn everyone's head at the range once, shoot a cylinder or two to impress your friends, your wrists will hurt for a couple of days, then clean it and put it back in the safe.......

Don't get me wrong; if I were in Grizzly country, I might consider one, but I'm not, and I already have too many handguns that will more than do the job on any 2- or 4-legged vermin.

But, if ya want one, GO for it! And enjoy!

There are alot of them on the used market for $700-$800.
I guess a few folks over estimated their Recoil Tolerance.
Not to mention $2 per rd ammo.

They are fun to shoot !! I don't have one but I know the range owner and get to shoot his . Recoil is not that bad , its a big heavy gun . He has handloaded 700 grain wadcutters to shoot just to show off , they have some recoil ;D !!

Nah....I'd be flinchin' & jerkin., about the 3rd or 4th shot.
I can handle a .44mag. just fine. That's as big as I'll ever need.
Buy what you like.
Beware the old man with only one handgun.

I have some pretty big hands and when I picked up the 500 it felt way to big to hold and the balance was not good for me. I shot it once and didn't need to shoot again. The gun needs a trypod and a 100lb. sand bag tied to the barrel. Just my humble opinion.

The .44 mag has has killed every land animal on planet earth. what more could you ask for? The solution is to learn to shoot. A well placed shot with a .44 will do far more than a poorly placed shot with a .500 IMHO. But then I see no reason for a .45-70 handgun either.

Don't like Smithy's personally. (Just my opinion) The Freedom Arms however is a wonderful gun. The grip frame on the Freedom Arms is like the Bisley Rugers. It seems to decrease recoil significantly. The recoil in a .454 Casull Freedom Arms is actually comparable to a .44 Mag. Ruger. The Ruger Double-Action grip frame leaves something to be desired. It seems to magnify recoil significantly.

The .500 S&Ws are a lot of fun to play with, but they do require handloading for several reasons. First is cost. The factory stuff costs about $2 per round. The second is to tailor the rounds for your particular situation. A big, heavy, high sectional density bullet doesn’t need all that much velocity to penetrate any animal. Excess velocity just flattens trajectory out to ranges where you shouldn’t be shooting anyway. For range work, they don’t need to be loaded hot to be a lot of fun.

For my range work, I tend to load lead bullets to about 900 fps and 325 HPs to 1100 fps. That is mild enough that I can shoot as long as I want without beating myself senseless.

Florida- Key word, kill. A .44 mag is ballisticly an anemic 30/30. With a very mad grizzly bear coming at me with ideas that I am on the menu I am not going to want a 30/30. It will deffinately kill the bear, but it might not stop it. The .454 is still only at 30/06 levels when handloaded, but that is a lot better than a 30/30. Stop-the attack breaks off or the bear dies at the shot. Kill-the bear may die hours, or days later after you are a pile of bear scat.

I figure that old bear will be slipping on what I left behind anyway and besides I only have to out run my hunting partner.

I just don't see the point in the Mag .500. Anything large enough that I'd need this thing for I'd sure as hell want to be 500 meters from when I put the squeeze on.

That's the thing Ranger. It's for when you can't be 500 meters away. It's for when you can't get away.
