This is a copy of a 1858 Remington New Army Revolver. I built it from a kit a few years ago. Sure wish I could hunt with it.

It sure was fun to build and is a lot of fun to shoot & vary accurate. But it is a pain to clean. ;)

Any one else built any guns? Lets see them.

Why can't you hunt it? It appears to me a .44, or am I wrong and it is a .36??

All hot water and nothing else with a good drying will clean it, as will the above windex..

I have a colt 1860 Army clone I built years ago, and it shoots fine. It was the very first gun in a hot tank for blueing as a test, and wow did that work out well for me!

I also have the Ruger Old Army called a 44 but is really a 45..

When I clean either gun I pull the wooden grips off and get to work. The colt style is far harder.

I may use windex, but if there is none just screaming hot water works as well and a drying heat source like a camp fire or oven works as well. I dry things well enough a coating of oil helps prevent water spotting as calicum is high with other minerals in my water.

Never shoot the gun in a day when there isn't time to clean it that day!

A friend of mine left one of my muskets dirty for a year! He ruined my musket and will never ever be loaned anything even non gun related items.. We ain't the best of friends over that incident since... I was pretty angery when I found out and saw the ruined bore.

It is .44 but the law here is a black powder pistol has to be .45 or larger and only single shot. Now thats the letter of the law, I could get away with it but choose not to. I don't need any trouble for breaking some silly law. I don't loan out guns because of a friend like the one you had. Cleaning is not hard but time consuming but that is because it has to be perfect. I take more care with that piece since I built it. I try and keep all my guns clean all the time it just seem like that one takes hours and hours. But thats cause I am so picky with it. Its by far my favorite shooter and one of the most accurate guns I have ever shot. ;D I would love to have a hot tank for bluing you lucky dog.

Funny law.. We have something like that in NH for long guns. It must be .40 and up single bore, but I believe I can use a .44 cap and ball.

There was a time when I wanted a rotating double flinter, which was a great set up.

These were made by a Lenard Day for a very reasonal price since he did the most outstanding work.

There were a rifle with a butt stock holding one flintlock, and a little lever released the bores which were over under, to spin over to fire the second shot. Both barrels had their own set of sights. This gun was truely a spectacle of old fashioned ingenuity, and period correct at that!

If I am not mistaken on your gun, the ball is 0.451 is it not? Which should get you into the .45 size ok. My colt clone is, and the Ruger uses 0.457 which makes it a .45.

Then you have the problem of multi shots which is nuts as you say..

Only a fool would load all 6 anyway, and so it makes me wonder why the law is written that way when most modern hunting guns can hold 5...

I wonder about your state and modern hand guns then?

The reason I wonder is a colt clone Walker can surpass the power if a modern brass .44 mag with ease.

I don't know how much you care, but I think if you did I would ask a Fish cop for the directors office and go see.

Most non- black powder shooters have some real funny ideas about black powder.
