Right now, my favorite little plinker is a Baretta Tomcat in .32 with a tip up barrel. This little thing is really small, but way fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate. Anyone else ever shot one?

My favotite is probably my H&R Sportsman, also a "tip up", nine shot 22 revolver, also know as a tack driver... Highly accurate and fun to shoot, double action, single action and nine shots to boot.

I used to have one of those. Sold it when I needed some cash. Kinda kick myself now. I liked that little revolver.

My favorite plinker in a 22 is my model 18 S&W 22 revolver... I also enjoy my High Standard Military Victor 22 semi auto... (pictured)

Over the years i've put a pile of meat in my freezer with these two guns!

:D Ditto on the Ruger Mk 2. Had one of my best days in the field with one of those!

:-/ I had a Heritage single-six also, .22/.22 Mag, thought it would be a good copy of the Ruger .22.22Mag. It seemed to shoot OK, but the trigger was not machined, it was stamped. The result was that the left side of the trigger was rounded, but the right leading edge of the trigger, was almost a burr! Since I'm right-handed, that was the edge that dug into my finger.

Now, I don't have tender hands, but I couldn't shoot but a half box of shells with that gun without it causing pain. Rather than file on it and ruin the finish, I traded it off.

My all time favorite plinker was an old S&W .32 long with a 4" barrel I bought back in 1982. It was the first handgun I ever owned. Ammo was about $8 a box for round nose lead but what a neat little package. I let it get away because I wanted a larger caliber. Sure wish I had it back.

Well, my favorite handgun plinker is a Ruger .22lr
Standard automatic, w/ a 6" brrl.
I bought it new in about 1962 or 3, for $39.95.
I had an old JC Higgins 12 ga. pump, I passed down to my son, years ago too. Still have the Ruger .22.
It still shoots well.
I have a Ruger 10/22 rifle that I shoot as lot too.

I've killed untold rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs,
raccoons, possums & such, in years of hunting.
A bunch of us cousins use to keep beagle hounds, for
rabbit dogs. And we had blue ticks or black & tans for
night hunting, coons & possums.
Easy to pop a treed racoon out of a tree, with that old Ruger, and a good flashlight.

Ahhhh, brings back a bunch of old memories.
Several of those old cousins are dead & buried.
Have Fun.

I have a Taurus .22 that is very accurate, but when I shoot single action the hammer is so rough that my thumb has the hide all cut off in a short time. Other than that, it's a nice handgun for a walk in the woods.

I also have a Colt New Frontier in .22/.22 mag. It also is accurate and I carried it on my trapline back when I laid steel for raccoons. I bought the Colt at Woolworths for $91 back in 1973.

Peace,

I have recently discovered dads old colt 22, single action, circa1950s in good condition, had a little work done to it, and slipped it on to my permit,as it was purchased in Vermont many moons ago, it is such a pleasure to shoot and not waste a small fortune on ammo, question though?

After a few cycles the chambers get a little sticky and hold onto spent casings, any suggestions? or is it normal for 22's? Great fun either way and very accurate little plinker.

It might be your ammo, 3cube.

Esp if you are using the solid lead bullets. Some manufacturers use wax as a lubricant and it builds up in the chamber.

edited to add:

I agree whole-heartedly about shooting .22's. The ammo is cheap, no recoil, little noise, no groveling around on the ground like an animal scraping up brass.

My favorite plinkers are the Ruger MKII and Single-Six.

Yeah, I got a bunch of the Federal .22 solid lead too. .22's are funny sometimes; accuracy will vary wildly between different types of ammo.

Nowadays, I tend to buy the Remington .22 HP (I think the brand is called "Golden"). The reason I settled on that was because my main .22 Rifle tends to shoot better with that brand. It is called Golden because it is plated with something or other.

What I did was get 3 or 4 different types and tried them out, mostly looking for the smallest group.

Peace,

Hah!!!, right I agree, I have 50 of those, I threw in the cart as something new to try, last time out. Would be nice to get them by the case, but have stayed away from, markets and shows.

They haven't been all that "public" friendly. Less and less of them, back when, there were gobs of shows each year.

Well now I will look forward to trying the new ammo and let you know.
