Has anyone used a bilge pump on a rain barrel? It occurred to me the these high volume/low head pumps would be good for this purpose. They all run on 12v batteries and cost about $120. I have used ones made by Rule and they seem to last 5-6 years. The one I have will pump 500gph at 5 feet of head. Instead of a float switch I just used a manual switch. Also "wash down" pumps for boats will up the head but reduce the volume, they are also 12v. Check out "West Marine" and look at the pump curves of the different brands they sell.

I installed a small one before a 12 volt Shurflo on the intake side and it increased the lift of the Shurflo from 4-6 ft. to near 10-12 ft. The bilge pump had a 1/2" output so it matched the Shurflo nice. Used 1/2" garden hose..
