Never owned one of my own, so I have no idea where to start.
What would be ideal for hunting Elk and Mule deer?
I hope to get slammed with a bunch of questions, because I do not know the right ones to ask to start off.

Go to a bow shop. *They will measure your draw length and draw weight. *Then start looking at bows. *You can spend $1000 plus, or less. *I spent $50 on ebay for a new one. *I got a lucky break. *Then you have to outfit it, arrow rest, sight, etc. *You can get a recurve or a compound bow. *A recurve you muscle back and release. *A compound bow you muscle back until the cam takes the weight. *You can then hold the draw as long as you want. *Both types of bows have their benefits and drawbacks. *Don't get suckered into buying any one name brand. *All bows shoot roughly the same. *Find the bow you like and can afford. *Find out your draw length and weight and look for a deal.
To hunt with one, you may have to qualify with it, depending on your state. *My state you only have to be able to shoot an arrow 100 yards. *To kill with it, the idea is to shoot the heart/lungs and let the deer, elk, bleed out. *You shoot and sit for 30 min. *The deer will startle when hit, but calm down when not pursued. *The deer will then lay down somewhere and die from blood loss. *If you can keep all of your arrows in the center ring of a paper plate, you're good enough. *The nice part of shooting a bow is you can do it in town, just have a good backstop.

I suggest starting out with a compound bow, most have adjustable weight. Find your draw length, start with a lower pound pull and as you get more comfortable increase the pull. Start with the basics then from there adjust, weather it's shooting fingers or release, type of arrow, type of sight, make adjustments as you go.
