My son has recently become interested in throwing knives, he picked one up at a gun show and he's become addicted! I would like to get him some for Christmas, any good websites and suggestions about which kind to buy?

Your use of the word: "recently" informs me that, as a newbie, you can expect him to lose a few blades.

Starting out, I would recommend the cheapest ones you can get. There's an old aphorism that's appropo here:

"Buy a young man some throwing knives and he'll throw for a day, or two. Teach him to make his own, and you'd better up your liability insurance."

lol.

Actually, it's not hard at all to make good throwing blades. I've used everything from flat stock to 3/8" rebar as acceptable throwing spikes/knives.

Here's a good source of semi disposables:

Thank you Techstuff. I came home from work yesterday to see a very forlorn 14 year shuffling through the leaves......his only knife :'(

If you live rurally.....I've got something that he, if he's anything like I was at 14, will absolutely love. *It blows throwing knives out of the water, you can be more accurate at longer ranges and the ammo's cheap as all get out. *Of course, it will require at least as much practice as a throwing knife requires and even greater self control. *But it's well worth the effort as I'm still having fun using one to this day:

If you have access to a cutting torch and a grinder. You can buy the flat metal pieces like at the home depo of lowes that are always in that little bin with other odd shaped metal. And you can make your own! There are many sites on the web that will tell how. But watch out, this will lead to possibly a lifetime of knifemaking. It will give him great pleasure and pain. He'll look at a piece of metal or saw blade and will be able to tell just what he can make it into.

Thanks guys. I ordered some knives yesterday (and a throwing star). If he sticks with this, we will do some research into taking it further. He has been shooting skeet competitively since he was 10, he has unbelievable eye/hand coordination so I should have expected something like this to come along. He is one of those kids who would rather be outside doing something than anything else. He comes home from school, grabs his dogs (two labs) and they are gone....off creating some kind of adventure.

He will thank you by using them to split a winter's firewood for you!

Happy throwing!

Without a pictorial record, it's all too easy to forget just how much things have changed in 58 years! *It's hard to imagine such a demonstration being allowed today!

At any rate, I wish you good success with your endeavors and God bless,

Wait until he ties a rolling target behind the dog on a string. Yes I saw this done with a old, slow dog.

at one time i had a handfull of 60 penny nails with the sharp end filed into a nice point. i didn't have heat or a hammer, but i think that a large nail could be beaten into a knife in a few minutes

Well, he got his knives Christmas am and I took him to be fitted for a longbow. Haven't seen the kid since (not really) but he has been OUTSIDE shooting his bow and throwing his knives. He is out there for hours at a time, no electronics at all for Christmas. I have even got out there and shot his bow, I could see myself doing this with him.

No electronics! That is blasphemy!

LOL

Good for you....Getting back to nature is the order of the day. Too many kids these days, weaned on video games and twinkies. A kid never truly discovers self until they discover the great outdoors. Their confidence sky rockets as they master the greater environment.
