Hmm, there are a ton of good knives out there. I think the main issue is that some which were always made in the US have some lines that are outsourced to other countries. Anyways, here are some that I have:
Buck
Schrade
Old Timer/Uncle Henry
Camillus
Ka-Bar
Gerber
My favorite brand is Cold Steel. I have three of them and they have an incredible edge and are built very well.

I have a bunch of knives, including several custom made hunting knives...
I think on average, the best common "affordable" hunting knives i own, were made by Gerber.
Like the other poster said, you need to pick through the "models" no matter what brand you choose...

I have more CaseXX knives, than others.
Also have a few Cold Steel, & Schrade.
I have some K-Bar/Camillus and one or 2
Buck knives. Add in the Green Rivers.......
and a whole bunch of junk knives.
You just can't have too many knives, I guess.

My top 5 are in no order
Buck- I have a #110 #112 and Stryder
Case- I got serveral of their knives
Spyderco- I have Police model, Endra, Delica and Recuse
Swiss Army Knives- Too many to name but all quality
Benchmade- Worth every penny
Of this list only those with an astrisk are
still in business. There are plenty of
pre-bankruptcy knives left for those no
longer in business to find.
Buck* OK now in Oregon.
Schrade (closed 2006)
Old Timer/Uncle Henry (closed 2006)
Camillus *(closed 2007)
Ka-Bar *(sold to ?)
Gerber *Ok all knives now contracted
With Camillus & Schrade going out of business
the heart of the American Cutlery industry is
dead. *:'( :'(
WOW I didn't know Camillus & Schrade went under. what a loss !! they made some of the nicest Quality knives IMHO it's a shame !!

Just my opinion but here's my list.
Spyderco
Benchmade
Chris Reeve
Strider
Mora
Mostly just use folders from these guys myslf, not that anything is wrong with their fixed blades, I usually prefer plain carbon steel in my real working blades so the Mora and others like it come to mind there. Thanks, Steve
Anyone know where I can get one of those old Case hunting knife with a XXX blade?

I've always been a fan of Buck knives. about two years ago I bought a fillet knife from them and when I opened it it was marked "CHINA." NO WAY SAYS I!! I sent it back. I since talked to a few other people and a man at a nearby knife shop. It seems that Buck like everyone else has attempted to stay in the price point market so more and more of their knives are going to be coming from China.
If it matters to you, you better check before you buy.

From what i can tell, a lot of the knife companys are now selling imports along with there own American made knives...

Price point ,and the anti knife sentiment today, forced Buck to leave
California for more friendly Oregon. Now it's the American quest
for price over quality that is squeezing all knife makers even more.

And imho that is a d@#n shame. I know that when I try to research for American made it is very difficult because the companies have become very good at hiding who owns what and where it is really made. One example is (made in china with american products) or vice versa.
As to the knives I have an old timer pocket knife, a buck belt knife, and my k-bar. These are my favorites along with my gerber multi tool. I have a collection of others as well. Spyderco makes a good blade for emt's that is curved to cut away clothes w/o harming the patient.

My favorite knife is a Kershaw 4" drop-point hunter that I bought more than 20 years ago. My wife was trying to cut a roast with her favorite butcher knife and, despite the fact that the knife was very sharp, was having a hard time. I handed her the Kershaw and said, "Try this." Big Mistake! Now my hunting knife is a kitchen knife.
The quality of the Kershaw (and its holster) is much higher than that of a Case hunter I recently purchased.

The current knife industry is not what it was years ago, and I am super duper disappointed at how it is going. I refuse to buy Cold Steel products anymore, they were always a favorite of mine, but no longer. I have tow that are old USA carbon V blades. SOG, plus I have a plethora of BUCK and Old Timer knives that are all USA. I have Benchmade, an old Butterfly with a balisong blade, very sweet. I have TOPS and a couple of KaBar including an old WWII Camillus Ka Bar.
There are still good kines out there. You just got to look.

If you're willing to spend the money, you can't beat the Busse kin knives - Swamp Rat and Scrapyard. Indestructible, lifetime guarantee, top quality.
I also like the HI khukuris.

If you want to get that knife back go take a look at http://www.cutco.com/products/thumbnail.jsp?category=20 , bought my wife a set for her birthday a couple years back and they are some of the best kitchen knives we've ever had, made in America with a lifetime warranty, they will even sharpen them for free, as long as you pay shipping.
