In the chat room last night, someone asked what a "morel" was. *I was stating that I had been finding morels all week even with it mostly cloudy and raining every day.... *I realize many here know what a morel is, but I decided to post pics for those that have never seen or eaten one. *I took these pics awhile back.... quite awhile. lol.... *(NOTE: *This is the only type of mushroom I like. lol)

After they are picked, I slice them in half lengthwise, and soak them in salt water. *When I fry them, I usually batter and fry although some people just sautee them in butter. *For my batter, I use about a cup of milk, cup of flour and one egg, salt and pepper to taste, mixed together. *Then I refrigerate it to help it thicken a bit.

Indy, that was the what I thought was odd. I bet the sun hasn't shone but a couple hours one or two days this whole week. We've had rain everyday and yet everyday, I find more morels that have popped up. I bet yesterday I picked about 35 or so.... On Tuesday, I did count and had 38. Wednesday only about a dozen.
Dang, I'm gonna be one big fungus! LOL

According to what I was told as a kid, mushrooms do best with lots of rain and around the full moon.

Here in Ky. we call the morel "dry land fish". Last year I found hundreds during a hunt. we were not able to eat them all or give them away so I froze them. Of course they are not as good as fresh but when you unthaw them on a paper towel then batter and fry then they are pretty good.

Today, I looked in the three places here that I usually find them. Only one of the three places had them. There was a lot of them, but they were all really small.

First trip out today really hunting, it was a good day, not used to traipsing up and down mountains for 8 hours....but it was a good start to the season, got 79 Grays and a few Yellows.....the next three weeks are going to be spent in the woods.

Gracie, that was just the first day, and they are just starting, I will go back to this same place after the next rain and get a couple hundred. It is a short season, so I try to be in the woods every day for the three weeks or so that we have them. Last year I ended up with 3,500 or thereabouts. I dehydrate them, they are just as good as fresh when re-hydrated, I was getting worried, I was down to about a quart of last years left.....:fie:
My kids in NH have taken a liking to them, so I gave them a couple gallons over the course of Fall and Winter, this year I am going up to teach them how to get their own...

Just like my mom and dad used to eat their morels, they loved them.
