Chamomile is very calming and can be used for children. However, valarian is more potent. It works as a muscle relaxer, mild pain releiver, and it is said to help one sleep better.

Valarian is very good, but beware of the smell it's bad. I could not drink the tea. The pills I hold my breath when I open the bottle. Passion flower is another one to help relax also. Here's a list from my tea book for nervous tension Damiana, hops, lavender, motherwort, passion flower, peppermint, rose hips, rosemary, saw palmentto, scullcap, st. john's wort. ALWAYS DO LOTS OF RESEARCH, ESPECIALLY IF ON MEDS. AND TRY ONE THING AT A TIME TO START WITH. IT MAY NOT AGREE WITH YOU. Check on more than one source. Lavender is a good aroma to calm. I use it a lot. St. john's wort can cause you to be sensitive to the sun. My husband can't wear gold because it changed his body chemistry.
Hope you find something to help. I hate to go to the Dr. also & try very hard not to.

Sissy,
Thank you for your post. It did remind me of a few more things that may help. I have personally used a tea out of one part passion flower, one part damiana, and two parts rose hips as a sleep aid. I forgot about st. Johns wort. The Vitamin Shop carries a St Johns wort blend by a company called solara(sp.) my husband takes it when he starts getting tension headaches. Also, never under estimate a good old B complex vitamin.

I like a Maypop (wild passiflora)tea in the evening. You can cut and dry the whole top of the plant, leaves and stems too. Sweeten with honey or add mint etc.

Did the chamomile work?
I have seen folks soak sores in chamomile, gargle with it, drink it for ulcers, rinse hair to lighten it, but never for nerves.
We like Valerian, Hops and Passiflora. For winterblahs and cabin doldrums use St. Johnswort. I am growing all of them, but the Valerian did not survive two years of drought. The hops is doing better than I expected.
