View Full Version : 2012 *the end of days?
The Mayan calander ends at 12-21-2012 for reasons that
no one yet knows. Many other cultures also predict some
terrible event in 2012 just as the Mayans did.
With the accuracy of the Mayan calander still to be explained
it's important to note that the last day on the Mayan calander
is 12-21-2012. It means something, just what is to be
deterimined.
If you follow the news at all it's hard to miss the increasing
fequency of natural disasters that are also much more severe
than at any time in humans past.
Earth's magnetic poles are "wobbling" with a decrease in the
magnetic envelope shielding that protects earth from the
solar flares that would fry earth in a heart beat.
All in all "things" are starting to stack up that point to some
event in 2012 that doesn't look like party time.
Most recent 2012 news........
The sun's next cycle of increased activity might have begun last week, according to a NASA scientist.
Solar activity waxes and wanes on an 11-year cycle. During the peak, the last of which occurred in 2001 and 2002, sunspots are common and solar storms frequent. The storms, which pummel Earth with charged particles, can knock out satellites and occasionally disrupt radio and even power transmissions on the planet.
The sun has been relatively quiet for many months. Now, a modest knot of magnetism, which appeared Dec. 11, might signal the long upward trend in activity.
"This patch of magnetism could be a sign of the next solar cycle," said solar physicist David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center. "Solar minimum is upon us."
The shift would mark the beginning of Solar Cycle 24.
Uncertain beginnings..........
"New solar cycles always begin with a high-latitude, reversed polarity sunspot," Hathaway explained in a NASA statement.
"Reversed polarity" means a sunspot with opposite magnetic polarity compared to sunspots from the previous solar cycle. "High-latitude" refers to the sun's grid of latitude and longitude. Old cycle spots congregate near the sun's equator. New cycle spots appear higher, around 25 or 30 degrees latitude.
The shift is not certain, however. If it's really the start of a new cycle, there ought to be a sunspot associated with the magnetic knot, but there is none. In fact, Hathaway announced a similar possible beginning to Solar Cycle 24 back in August, 2006.
Stormy forecast......
Though forecasts vary wildly, some scientists predict Solar Cycle 24 will be intense. If so, "it could have significant impacts on telecommunications, air traffic, power grids and GPS systems," according to the NASA statement.
The peak is expected in 2011 or 2012. Intense storms can occur at any time in the cycle, however, though the worst is not likely to begin anytime soon.

There was a program on one of the channels not too long ago, I think Discovery, which attempted to explain the possible relevence of the Mayan calendar. Some astronomers suggested that it was based on a constellation's alignment with the center of the milky way, as perceived from Earth. Though this doesn't explain why a few other cultures have also marked 2012 as doomsday event.
For all interested in any possible 2012 end of days

My friends and I occasionally kick this around. Because of the many references to the year 2012 in religious as well as secular prophecy, and some scientific postulation, we all take the attitude 'it COULD be true'. However, this is the same group that, this past spring, responded to the religious outcry of "There's going to be a tsunami that wipes out the East Coast on Friday!" and the resultant insistence of a coming Rapture, by donning water wings and life preservers and going down to our favorite bar that Friday night to drink and make fun. ;D
The fact is that, in any serious and long term SHTF scenario, all we can do is prepare as best we can and leave the rest. If Yellowstone blows its top, if that old volcano on the Canary Islands falls into the sea and really DOES cause a massive tsunami to wipe out the East Coast, or if, at the next Andreas earthquake, everything EAST of the fault falls into the ocean, there is not a whole lot anyone who lives in the downward sweep of a lava flow or the flood zone of an entire coast can do. I'm a fatalist in that regard - all I can do is the best I can do. Worrying is a waste of brain power.

Actually, it's a misconception (and media hype) that the Mayan Calender ends on 12/21/2012. The "long count" ends on that date. It's really no different than the end of any other calender......one cycle ends, the next begins.
This is the fourth long cycle according to the Mayan calender. The fifth cycle will begin on Dec. 22. It's based on astronomical cycles. If creators of the calender were still around, they would simple hang up a new calender.. ;)

Weeeellllll, eventually....yes. Just not on 12/21/2012....LOL
The only reason why I find 2012 interesting is that it points to either prophesy or...
There is a program written to predict the future by using spider bots on the Internet and it also chose 2012 to end all predictions... but of course that would be expected.
You see every time the program came across 2012 predictions of end times it simply noted that there would be no need to predict anything beyond this date.
So it stopped at 2012, after all it had been told many times that the "world" would end then right?
Funny... but then that is where it gets funny "Oh" instead of funny "Ha-Ha".
We know that the oldest date for 2012 was set by the Greek Delphi.
The Mayans then set 2012 (Dec 21 to be exact) much... much later and yet according to "history" (this is a thread about history right?) the Mayans and the Greeks had absolutely no contact.
History will also tell you that Central America had no contact with Egypt and that the pyramids found in both are purely...
Yes, the Axtecs did claim that a serpent God had a beard and would return to... well... coincidence again according to history.
All that any of this proves of course is that history is a funny thing: we only know it if our guesses are correct.
And one can not study history without accepting that substance is exacting while interpritation is mostly guesses.
Tread lightly with history because there are fools among us who feel that it is a science much like math.
It is not.
It is a combination of solid fact and wonderful fancy.
It is the most important thing that mankind can never truly understand!
On December 20th 2012 there will be a huge party at me house!
I will drink too much, the music will be too loud and I will expect a monumental hang-over the next morning.
I won't mind too much if I miss it!
Yet alas... my cable bill will be payed in full and I will shun credit whenever offered right up until the last moment.

*chuckle* I would love to come to the party.
If I understand your comments correctly, you are referencing the fact that the 2012 date appears in multiple cultures?? *There's a very mundane reason for that......they were all looking at the same stars. *The cycle is the cycle.... ;)
Sharon
Mountain- The cycle is the cycle....
Wax- Funny you should mention that.
All history has been cyclical except the Judeo-Christian-Muslim linear model. Of course that model has ruled the planet for the last 1,500 years so everyone has been looking for the "end times".
And I do mean everybody, which produces a rather funny cycle of itself.
Every generation sinces Jesus's has seen "signs" but every fourth generation or so has become firmly convinced "this is it!"
And in some ways it has been "it".
Krause and Howe describe this as a Saeculum using a perverted Roman term for full lifetime. They make a pretty good run at a historical trend but fall short of actually predicting the future as they attempt to do (Read the Fourth Turning if you like).
My predictions are absolute of course:
In the next two or three decades we will see changes that most people could never expect!
There will be great tragedies and wonderous advancements.
My wife will be proven wrong twice and I will simply give up on the rest of the moments when it could be done but even on those occassions she will win by declaring that my proof is not what I meant to point out so it will pretty much be a wash.
And the world will continue to turn.

Come on guys! 2012!
In 2012 the planets will align, causing a great tug on the earth, which will cause the magnetic poles to switch, which will cause that great ball of magma in the earth to rotate with the poles, which will cause the earths crust to brake and shift, which will cause the world to loose 1/3rd of its population. It's gotta be true, I seen it on Discovery.
But I’m ready…. I am going to install big rollers on the bottom of my house, so when the earths plates shift, my home will just roll along. 8)

"Scary?" *And where does the government figure in this? * ??? *
The technology forcasted in the video isn't some social engineering scheme, but is and will be driven by the choices of individuals acting in a free market. *And it has all kinds of wonderful possibilities for self-reliance and freedom.
Think about it:
Wouldn't it be great if homesteaders could make money off of a newly-revived Passenger Pidgeon, or the Dodo Bird, or even off of stampedes of Wooly Mammoths providing fur, meat, ivory, and methane?
Wouldn't it be super to pick apples, oranges, plums, and cherries with Inspector Gadget arms, without risk of falling, fatigue, arthritis, or melanoma from the Sun?
Heck, if we can terraform Mars, that would put considerable distance between a homesteader and U.S. Gummint land-grabbers. *What would be the harm in that?
And going even deeper, why would we need Big Brother watching over us if we didn't need sleep and had our own robot eyes surveying our holdings 24-7? *
And if we were super-annuated or even immortal, what would be the use for a Social Security "lock-box"?
Instead of "Resistance Is Futile! *You Will Be Assimilated!" the slogan of Backwoods cyborgs would be: "Come on in, fellers! *The virtual water is jest fine!"

Dec 21, 2012 sounds as good as any other. Being an Electrician...and a Ham Radio operator....I've always wondered how the scientists get away with telling us that the polarity of the magnetic poles are about to flip....but don't worry about a thing. fred- From what I learned in electronics school, the polarity of an item is determined by its direction of spin....
Wax- Nice try Fred, but you are scaring the kids for no real reason!
Yes... there can be no doubt that the Earth's polarity has "flipped" many times but that fact can only be used to poke fun of the Global Warming folks!
The fact of course is that it has not only flipped a number of times in human history but it has flipped in written human history!
Sigh... people get confused and it is not a new phenomenon.
They forget that society is a false or fake construct and by doing so they forget what humans are.
When I was but a child I read details of a scientist who visited a cave in the cold white north of what is now considered to be Europe. He interprited a passage scratched in a long forgotten Norse language as reading, "The sky came down yesterday... it destroyed my people!"
The problem of course is that this "scientist" interprited that message as an "obvious" reference to the God Oden and how fleeting man is without Gods.
I myself am not that convinced or pompous!
What if it means exactly what it says?
It makes the idiots running around crying about Global warming well... idiots!
George Carlin is dead now but he is absolutely right in saying that the Earth does not need to be saved.
The Earth is fine.
People are screwed!
Some day the tropics will become Siberia and vice versa!
Three thousand years ago people built walls that are now burried by... not 20 feet or even 40 feet as the Chicken Littles declare is now completely unnacceptable but by 300 feet of water!
And yet man survived.
It is sad in a way that we have convinced ourselves of our own superiority but some of us at least know better.
2012 will come and pass.
Man is perfectly safe.
But society is screwed and that is really what these idiots cry over!
Well I see it as a cycle. It is time for 90% of what we call society to be destroyed. We are overpopulated and we have been asking for it for at least 500 years now.
All one needs to do is look around and witness the insanity of complaint concerning prosperity.
Consider that for one moment please:
It has become a "bad" thing for a predator to be so affluent that individuals become fat!
Ask any given lion if becoming "fat" is a bad thing!
Any given one you like.
This has happened before of course, the Romans wrote of it before they learned a very clear lesson.
Nature allows acmes, it is part of the cycle.
But what follows is also part of the cycle.
Those who actually survive must have a great deal of luck but there is always something else involved and that other something is what I personally count upon.
Someday my children will pray for something simple like "Global Warming"!
They will see day turn to night, night turn to day, and then something that is in between yet worse in both regards!
My children of course will not hesitate to take action.
Most will die anyway but some have a chance to live.
Because that is what man is: the best predator produced by nature so far.
I emphasize "so far"

I am from New orleans...and this sounds like a good excuse for a party and an Allnighter!
I am glad to see that you are from New Orleans Vid; because the chicken littles of this nation would claim it no longer exists.
Much earlier in this thread the claim was made that nature regarding natural disasters was getting worse somehow... and the claim passed as if it were a given and naturally true or fact.
It would be funny if it were not so sad.
In 1900 Galviston found out an example of how bad nature could be...
In 1900 ten percent of the population would have been 4,200 (total population is listed as by census as 42,000) and had that many died it would have constituted one of the worst natural disasters in history but more than 8,000 died and some estimates go higher than twelve!
Nature wasn't in a very good mood that day but things could have been worse... and they will be which is the point of course.
Many of the 42,000 were simply not in Galveston it being September 8th at least a quarter of the population had not showed up to winter out the cold weather at a summer locale.
Here is the kicker folks: That hurricane was only a catagory 4... historically one of the weaker ones.
I say this not because a cat 4 is considered weak by modern measurements but someday a hurricane will strike that island that can not be measured by our current system. It will be called a 5 while it picks up heat from the gulf but the conditions at landfall will be overheated and the scales will be stripped of all usefulness as all measuring equipment is destroyed... some winds will be recorded as 200 or 220 but those of us left will quickly declare all measurements completely unreliable because modern man can not deal with reality when reality points out he is helpless.
There are more than a few ironies:
1: The sea wall built to protect against hurricane force waves is likely to act like a gigantic bulldozer. It is built on sand and it is likely to wind up in Houston along with a great deal of that sand and a great deal of human DNA.
2: Many will not leave because they have been warned before and the warnings were proven to be overblown (no pun intended).
3: The people that survive will actually convince themselves that they have a right to be shocked by the event. Surprise in the face of foreknowledge is a form of insanity and modern man has proven itself completely insane in this regard.
New Orleans exists in a giant bowl below sea level not only next to the sea but next to a humongous lake... yet people to this day pretend they did not know that it would eventually flood!
A group of terrorists attempted to blow up the World Trade Center in 1993 and declared that they intended to continue to attempt this until they were successful; yet the day after it occured idiots roamed the streets in shock. Who could have even guessed such a thing?!?
2012 actually involves two different things.
There is the conspiracy that the date is somehow special and is predictive in some way.
There is the fact that our society is going to end and that the majority of mankind will die during that ending.
There is really no reason to address the first one because it is either true or it is not. It could be self fulfilling as some nut pushes a button while others panic and react and initiates the end. This scenerio is not that farfetched and paranioa will get much worse as we approach December 21st of 2012.
It is going to make Y2K look like a boy scout preparedness drill.
But the dear reader and I will enjoy this a great deal and remember this please: no matter what happens the odds of you and I being alive during this date are amazingly small considering society as we know it!
Society has had panics in the past but this will be monumental precisely because it has been written in stone for all of modern mans history.
There is good news for those of us who despise society and zoning ordinances and PTAs because the fact of the matter is we don't need 2012.
6 Billion is just not sustainable... 9 Billion is just insane.
The paper in our pockets has not been worth gold for 76 years, and the only way our society can prove its worth is by exchanging it for lead soon.
China and russia has it's own lead of course and such an exchange will not end well.
The false construct we know as society is coming to an end.
While we can not predict the actual date (and it is very likely to be a timed span as things spiral into the unavoidable) we can look at the situation and know for a fact that society can not be sustained artificially anymore and must naturally be reset.
People in Rome when it fell did not know how to keep the water flowing.
But they knew how to survive without the society that Rome provided.
Today... well... take heart in the fact that if you are reading this in this forum you are already ahead of most of the society you live in.

Does this mean that Santa won't be around that Christmas ?
If so, save money and don't buy any presents.
I think I'll just hide and watch, if I live another 3 1/2 years.

It can't possibly be. Because Chicago has a bid in for the 2016 olympics and no ancient calender is going to defy Mayor Daley.

I hope not. December 21 is my wife and my 13th wedding anniversary. I guess it would give me a great excuse not remember. "I'm sorry honey, with the world ending I forgot."

Try the death clock on the internet (search it, but it might just be deathclock.com). It said I'd live to 70 something. Thought it was a joke until I put my dad's info in and a box came up that said "time expired". Thought something was wrong with the computer then realized what it meant...he had already passed! And it was pretty darn close on the date! It might have been closer but I had to guess on some of the answers. That way you'll know if you have another 3 1/2 years or not.
