View Full Version : Are there any legal plants used for pain

Since I read the site here about illigal plants I have been searching for plants for pain and the main one is the poppy which is highly illigal to grow. We talking felony there. Marijuana is next and it is still against the law, but not as severe.
I am just wondering if there are any plants I can grow for pain and not go to jail. ;D
Any help here?

Dennis have you explored the use of willow bark? It supposedly contains a substance similar to aspirin. Thats the one that comes to mind right now. You might google holistic medicine. I have looked into a lot of the holistic medicine and the pain treatments will help with mild to moderate pain, but severe pain is a whole different animal. I can relate to pain as I had a back injury(4 disc in 2007) and right arm injury (rotator cuff tear, bruised to humoral head, surgery to remove 1/2 inch of collar bone). The pain is awful and constant, with narcotic pain meds you cope. But if you do everything that modern medicine and holistic suggest to help your self you would do nothing in life but spend all your time doing one thing or the other to try and get relief. Been there done that and its no fun. BTW workers comp sucks.
Yep may be illegal to grow a lot of things but remember there is a catchin before there is a hangin!

Good luck and be blessed!

If it is anything like asprin I don't even won't think about it. A single asprin sets my stomach on fire.
I need something easy on the tummy.

Crafty - you might be able to tolerate willow-leaf tea - lots milder than an asprin and it still has the pain-killer stuff in it. (salicylic acid)

There was just an article about willow leaves at Killer Plants. ("Killer" cool, not "killer - killer!") :)

http://www.killerplants.com/renfields-garden/20010718.asp

Willows use the salicylic acid to deter bugs - bugs get woozy & fall off before munching much of the leaf. For someone lots bigger than a bug, though - it will releave pain.

This year I ordered some Toothache plant at Pinetree Garden Seeds. Here's what it says about it:
#48403 TOOTHACHE PLANT - $1.35

Spilanthes Acmella (50 seeds) This annual produces bronze green foliage and olive shaped flowers with a burgundy eye. The leaves and flowers numb the mouth and are said to work better than commercial products. Also an antibiotic.

I'll let you know if it works!

Thanks Stella and CarolAnn also. After I read CarolAnns post, I did some looking into it and you both may be right. I am now thinking a tea may work and not set the tummy on fire.
And Stella, I feel for you. I have been there and done that more than once. It would be easier to find a bone in my body that hasn't been broke one time or another than one that has been broke.
From my feet to my neck. Crushed vertebras, ankles, hands, elboes and they were all described to me as crushed.
One time I fell the doctor was trying to get me to stay in the hospital and I was ready to go home, which I did like a friging idiot anyway, and he told me, "Think of your vertbras being eggs and I dropped them from the cieling right here onto the concrete floor. That is what happened to you back." I thought the vertibras were the short ribs you have at the bottom of your back That's where it was hurting at.
Plus they had me on Morphine so I thought I felt better than I was. I was bull headed back then.
(My wife just read what I have wrote so far and said back then?? What about you out there cutting that tree down on crutches? And I did that too. It was cold and we needed fire wood. What can I say? That don't count on the first go around but I did do it)
I got out of the hospital, had to sign myself out saying the doctor wasn't responsible with my left hand because my right hand was in a cast, and I still went out and cut firewood that day.
Me and my dumb hard headed @$$ was laying with my back up against the fireplace that night telling my wife to go get the pain med prescreption filled and hurry up. I worked all day and didn't need a pill but as soon as I set down, that was that.
I did it to my own self on that go around, but I learned to listen to the doctors after that but that didn't help any. I have been hurt so many times it ain't funny.
And you are 100% right about the Workmans Comp. That is the biggest bunch of bull I ever seen. If they had started paying me something from get go I could have used gas to heat with. No, it took all winter to get a dime, and then I was awarded $5,040 for a 10% disability that has cost me thousands on top of thousands of dollars over the years.
The law was I couldn't sue them because they had Workers Comp.
Yet this was the first large construction job I ever worked on.
The law was I was supposed to go to a saftey meeting that would have told me I was supposed to have a saftey belt on and be hooked off.
Never heard of a saftey belt.
I thought I was supposed to be the cat on the wall and I was until a broken welding lead snapped and I was playing tug a war with someone that turned loose.
48 feet when I should have fell 6 feet and been caught by a saftey belt I didn't even know existed.
$5,040 to hurt the rest of my life.
Don't you just know I love our gubbernuts???

Anyone else that have any more ideas other than poppies and pot??
Thanks to both of you. I will try it if the tree is still standing. I am not even sure of that. But I will try to hunt one down and try some tea.
Thanks a lot.
Dennis

As already mentioned, willow bark tea works great (doesn't have to be from a black willow, I used different types and they all work and are easy on the stomach). Also the bark from a popplar or trembling aspen works as tea. Prune a young branch and scrape off the bark, about a heaping tablespoonful for a mug of tea.

In addition to willow or poplar, if relaxing your muscles would help with the pain, add all or some of the following:
Yarrow (antiinflammatory, revvs up your circulation and is slightly relaxing), as well as betony/wooly lousewort. Other types of lousewort also work. It is incredibly muscle relaxant, like coming out of a hot bath. And I also add some highbush cranberry bark for its antispasmodic properties.

Thanks for the info. I have some poplars in the back yard. As soon as the sun comes up I will walk back there, well, I said back yard but there is a 20+/- acre field inbeteen me and them, LOL, but I will walk back there and get some branches and give it a try.
I will hunt down the seeds for the rest of the things you listed and plant them asap.
Thanks again. I just need to get out from under the 200+ bucks a month for pain relief some way or another and this forum has shown me there is natural things I can take for the relief. I would much rather do it legally, but I am not above growing poppies or marijane, LOL. I am going to do what it takes but I hope I can do it and not have the worry of jail time hanging over me the rest of my life.
And we live in a "FREE" country. Yea, right.
Thanks again for the info.

I have read that you can smoke catnip and that the effects are similar to marijuana but without the side effects. I have no idea where I read this or if it is even remotely true. So take it for what it's worth.

A great place to order seeds for herbs from is www.sandmountainherbs.com (http://LINKADDRESS) They carry a huge variety of hard to bome by seeds.

If you are new to using medicinal herbs - you usually have to experiment a bit with the amounts to find what works best for you. Also, different plants of the same species will have slighly different potency.

Ideally, you will collect the part of the plant with the medicinal properties at the time that plant part has the highest potency. So for leaves, early summer; flowers, when they first come out; roots, fall; bark, spring and fall.

Be aware that you can be allergic to herbs and that they can cause adverse reactions with other medications you are taking.

A good book to get you started on alternative medicines, based on scientific studies, which also lists side effects, is "Prescription for Herbal Healing" by Phyllis Balch. Not only does it list the most commonly used medicinal herbs, it also details a big list of different ailments and which herbs are best to treat them with. I'd really recommend it; I consult it all the time and find it very detailed and helpful.

Valarian is an herb that you may want to look at as well. It works as a muscle relaxer, mild pain releiver, and it is said to help one sleep better.

Crafty sounds like you have way bigger injuries than I do, just remember this, try not to over do things as you are continuing to injury your body. Believe me I know how hard that is. I still from time to time do things that I know will cause the pain to be worse but at the time I feel like I have to do the task at hand. Which in reality I could wait for help. We simply must take care of the function we have left. My latest stupid stunt was Saturday morning. Went out on the deck in my house shoes with plastic bottoms none the less to get the bucket to take ashes out of the fireplace, not noticing the frost on the deck steps, I did have the sense to hang on to the hand rail, and fell down all 4 steps. Felt like a goober, jerked both arms , scuffed left ankle not to mention the backside. I could have waited for hubby to do that chore, but I didnt. He has since threatened to wrap me in bubble wrap every morning when he leaves for work.
You sound like my hubby, 1 year ago Thanksgiving he crushed off the end on his middle finger on his left hand in an accident on the drill rig and went back to his job the next day, surgeons removed the tip of the finger at the base of the nail. Even being an EMT for 14 years just looking at his finger made me nauseous. Guess this is something we all do. Kinda makes you understand why elderly folks dont quit, and do things for themselves that we think they should not be doing.
I pray you find something to give you some relief from the pain.

Have a great day!
stella

Thanks for all the info everyone and especially Thank you so much for the prayer Stella.
Sorry to hear about your fall. Hope all is better.
I am really bad at stupid things like that myself. I have 9 steps off our back porch and I have rode that wagon a few times too and I still haven't figured out how it happens. Just the first thing I know my feet aren't under me.. And all the way to the bottom two times I know.
I went and over did it again today. My daughters boy friend, well, actually his mother that goes to the same church as my wife goes to, and I go sometime, :-[ , whatever, but her pipes froze and Lord have mercy, she had a mess so I go over to more or less lead Mike in fixing it.
Oh boy am I hurting now. It is always the task at hand that gets the blue ribbon, isn't it? LOL.
I guess the older you get the harder your head gets and the softer the body gets, because I am so sore right now I don't feel like taking my boots of to go to bed. LOL. That's why I am still setting here now. :'(
Thanks again for all the suggestions. I promise you I will give everything said a try until I can tell the pill company where to stick it.
I did find out that one joint of maryjane, ;D will make 4 cups of tea, reduce the pain to a livible level, and calms the nerves to boot. There wasn't any high at all. Just the pain relief and my nerves were better than they have been in 30 years.
Wish I had known that 30 years ago. Some of the welding test sure would have been easier to pass. I passed them all, but they sure were nerve racking.
Looks like I will have a heck of a garden this year. :D
Well, thanks again. I am taking my boots off. :)

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have went through all the post and listed everything said on anote book and will be looking for seeds for the plants or the trees themselves.
I'll be out tomorrow if it doesn't snow like they are calling for where I know is a lot of poplars so I'll take the lopers, along with my gaps and belt to climb the tree with.
Not sure if I am repeating myself but there was an old lady when I was a kid that raised cane if she caught us in her weeping willow tree where we grew up at. I went down the road the other day to see if it was still there and there is a garage there now. :'(
I know there was more of them around but for the life of me I can't remember where. I really don't remember seeing one since I was a kid.
But I am looking.
I just had an idea. I will get on the tradeing post on the radio tomorrow and see if anyone has a willow tree that needs triming for free. ;D Maybe I'll get a bite.
Take care all. It don't take a heck of a goof to hurt for ages.

Dennis, i have black willows here. i may be able 2 help if you want.

It would be sorta of a wierd thing to ship but if you would cut up a few branches to fit into a box I would pay you for your time and shipping cost.
I would like to try it just to see if it works and still haven't found one yet. I know there has got to be some around here but I am at a loss.
It sure would be nice to tell the drug store to kiss off.
Thanks for the offer.

I am looking up this stuff and I am finding this and that, that is winter green and different types of dang near all of it.
My mind is going in circles trying to find seeds, and at the same time I am looking up Siberian tomato seeds and I have found 23 so far and they are all different.
Maybe I need a druggest for a girlfriend and give up, LOL. That was a joke. I am happily married 19 years. Be 20 on Valintines day. ;D
If any of you that has posted knows the exact offical name for the plant and where to buy the seeds, that would help a great deal.
Thanks to all of you again.

Crafty do ya have a river in your neck of the woods? The best place to look for willow trees. Here in Ky they grow all along the river bank.

Just an idea.

Stay warm and have a great day!

this is not a plant, but look for dolomite Tablets, you may have to look at several vitamin companies and it is hard to findnow and has been tinkered with.I used to buy 1000 for 7 dollars and it was pure. It seems to work good on man made pain. Just gave some to a woman who had foot surgery and it helped her. willow is good, just whittle the bark off and steep in water. It is the real thing, aspirin is the chemical copy. there is some real good stuff but we better not discuss that.

You're beautiful Stella. I know excatly where they are now. Down in a river bottom I used to hunt in. They call it Sandy river but it is really just a large creak but they crow all along the bank down there.
I knew that I knew where some was but couldn't remember for the life of me. But Lord getting down there will be the deal.
The last time I wa down there I had several shots I could have made but it would have took a bulldozer to brought the deer out it's grow up so bad. I'll wait until we have a flood this spring and it washes all the small growth down some.
And I'll try to find the dolomite also mom. LOL, my wife will be planting her flower garden out front this year.
She has been asking me to do it for a couple of years now and I told her I can't eat flowers. I was going to plant vegetables with the little get up and go that I had, LOL.
I have changed my mind about that tho. ;D
I am ordering a few things ya'll have posted. Maybe something or a combination of two somethings will work.
Thanks again
Dennis
